9 WAYS TO SUNDAY SUPPER
There are 52 Sundays in any given year (sometimes 53!), so there is ample opportunity for families to gather and eat a meal together. Though it may seem like a daunting task, gathering every member of the family at the same table at the same time, it doesn’t need to be every Sunday or even on a Sunday. The important thing is that families take time to be together, share conversations about their week and slow their pace if only for the hour or two it takes to enjoy a meal. That’s why we found 9 ways to Sunday Supper that will help you create an easy-going, enjoyable meal for all.
Potluck meals, especially for large, extended families, are an obvious choice. The meals do not need to be complex. Give each family an assignment of one meal element the week before. Remember to include:
- Main Dish
- Side dish
None of the dishes need to be fancy. The point is to bring the family together for a tasty and friendly meal.
Breakfast for Supper
Breakfast is one of the easiest, tastiest, and least expensive meals to make. Or, you can skip supper that week (or month) and have breakfast or brunch instead. Some quick and easy choices for a family breakfast meal include:
- Scrambled eggs
- Egg bake
- Biscuits and Gravy
- French Toast Sticks
Some of these dishes can be prepared ahead to cut down on the prep and cleanup time.
Soups and Sandwiches
Another easy and tasty meal includes Soup and Sandwiches. Just about any soup can be made ahead or brought by another family member. You can even have multiple soup options if it tickles your fancy. Choose your favorite bread, meats, cheeses, spreads, and other toppings. Everyone makes their own sandwich and dishes up a steaming bowl of delicious soup!
The appetizers always get our mouths watering. They’re delicious and come in small, bite-sized pieces that allow us to try different kinds. Hosting an appetizer night can be much like a potluck meal but with not-so-fancy hors d’oeuvres. Make items like:
- Mac and Cheese Bites
- Caprese Bites
- Fruit Skewers
- Vegetables and dip
- Cheese and Crackers
You might notice if you go the appetizer route that somehow, these finger foods make the conversation flow much more freely.
Give each family member a chance to pick the menu. This way, when the menu that week includes foods someone doesn’t like, they know they will have the opportunity to pick the meal another night. Though, if mom’s meatloaf is everyone’s favorite, you may just have to call it Meatloaf Night.
Who makes double batches so you can put the extra in the freezer for a quick meal later in the month? Well, these freezer meals also get forgotten. So instead, use your Sunday Supper to make room in the freezer for fresh batches.
Create a salad bar with everyone’s favorite toppings. Include meats, cheeses, croutons, veggies, nuts, or any item that looks and tastes good on a salad. You can also call it Taco Salad night and prepare the ground beef or chicken earlier in the week. An alternative to the salad bar is a baked potato bar. The toppings are similar, but baked potatoes serve as the base instead of lettuce and can be made in the oven, pressure cooker, or crockpot for easy prepping.
A picnic option is basically an outdoor potluck. Choose outdoor-friendly dishes and invite everyone to meet in the backyard or neighborhood park. Add a few outdoor games to liven up the meal and stir up a little competition, too!
Make Your Own Pizza
Par-baked dough or your own special recipe serves as the basis for this delicious meal. Everyone gets to build their own pizza from sauce to cheese. Take a little taste of each others’ combos and maybe you’ll discover a new favorite pizza. This meal is the best way to make sure everyone gets something they like, too!
