President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Public Law 689, officially creating the U.S. Navy Women's Reserve. Known as the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), the Law replaced men with women in shore jobs so male sailors could go to sea.

Jimmy Hoffa disappears from the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, at about 2:30 p.m. He was set to meet mafia crime figures Anthony "Tony Jack" Giacalone and Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano, but the men never showed up. Hoffa have never seen or heard from again.
