WORLD QUALITY DAY
Held every second Thursday in November, World Quality Day provides a chance to reflect on the role of quality management in our lives. It’s also a day to think about how individuals and team members can develop more efficient processes, systems, and outcomes.
Quality is vital to successful organizations. Excellent quality management helps businesses achieve excellence in all that they do. Quality professionals focus on five areas, which include governance, assurance, improvement, leadership, and context.
Organizations not only have to survive these days, but they also need to thrive. In order to do this, quality must be of utmost concern. Effectively managing quality helps to protect the organization against risks, as well as enhance its brand and reputation.
Some companies have faced detrimental consequences due to poor quality management. These companies include:
- BP – in 2010 an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico left 10 people dead and billions of dollars in damage.
- Volkswagen – in 2015 the car company was caught in an emissions scandal that is projected to cost them massive amounts of money.
- Tesco, Iceland, Aldi, and Lidl – in 2013 their reputations were tarnished when it was discovered their beef products contained horsemeat.
Excellent quality management always asks 3 questions. How good is it? Is it good enough? How can we make it better? Answering these questions truthfully will deter organizations from cutting corners and produce products and services that consumers can count on.
HOW TO OBSERVE #WorldQualityDay
Many companies around the world celebrate this day with seminars, presentations, quizzes, and competitions. To participate, think about the company you work for. How important is quality to them? Is there some areas you think they could improve?
As an individual, think about the importance of always doing your best. Whether it’s at work, school, or in your home. Do you always put forth your best effort? In what areas do you think you could improve? No matter how you choose to observe this day, be sure to share it on social media with #WorldQualityDay.
