WISHBONES FOR PETS MONTH

National Wishbones for Pets Month is an annual designation observed from October 15 – November 30. During this time, pet sitters and animal lovers raise as much money as they can for their favorite pet-related charity. The great part is, this national observation actually lasts 6 weeks! It’s recognized right around the start of the holiday season because this, of course, is a time of giving. The goal of the campaign is to keep animals in mind just like we keep our friends, families, and the less fortunate in mind during this wonderful season.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Make an animal’s day (or life.) Snap a cute picture with your furry friend, and use #WishbonesForPets to post on social media. There are several other ways to celebrate, so to help you decide how you’d like to lend a hand, we’ve created a little list for you.

Pet Sitters: You can find a pet sitter representative in your area, or become one yourself! That way, you can organize your own mini-campaign to help the cause. Set up donation boxes in your city so that people can leave pet food, blankets, kitty litter, etc. It’s a simple, easy way to help… and honestly, it goes a lot further than you may think! Ask some shelters around town what they are most in need of, and put out a sign or social media post to let the people know. It adds up.

Pet Owners: Since you already have a furry friend, go through some toys or blankets they no longer like, give them a quick wash, and donate to your local charities. You can also celebrate the month by giving your pet some extra snuggles, and maybe even an extra treat here and there.  And hey, pro-tip: November 1st is National Cook for Your Pets Day, which falls right in the middle of this 6-week span. Talk about killing two birds with one stone.

Animal Lovers: Check with your local shelters, groomers, or pet sitters to find out what they are in most need of, and find out the best way you can help. Donate, donate, donate. It really doesn’t cost much! And, if you want to go a step further… consider adopting a pet from your local shelter to give them a loving home right at the beginning of the holiday season.

HISTORY

Wishbones for Pets month was created by Janet Depathy in 2004. The first year, she was the only participant. But it didn’t take long for local businesses, news stations, and pet shelters to help it spread. Now, professional pet sitters (and pet lovers) from all over the U.S. and Canada are taking part. The goal is to make animals feel loved and give them full bellies, just like we do to each other during this time of year.
