RANDOM ACTS OF POETRY DAY

Random Acts of Poetry Day on the first Wednesday in October encourages outbursts of poetry. The day for poets and poet wannabes spreads random poetry through art, the written word, and voice.

It seems that since the beginning of time, people throughout the world have been expressing themselves through poetry. Known for its distinctive style and rhythm, this genre of literature offers a great way to express feelings and ideas.

You might think of poems as written with stanzas full of rhyming words. However, there are different kinds of poems. Some of the most popular include:

  • Sonnet
  • Haiku
  • Limerick
  • Ballad
  • Epitaph
  • Ode
  • Free verse

Along with the different types of poems, there are three main types of poetry. These include narrative, dramatic, and lyrical.

Even if you aren’t into poetry, you have probably heard these names: William Shakespeare, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, and Sylvia Plath. These are some of the most famous poets in history. Modern-day poets include Sam Sax, Eve Ewing, Andrew Feld, and Sharon Olds.

HOW TO OBSERVE #RandomActsofPoetryDay

The idea of Random Acts of Poetry Day is to leave a poem somewhere randomly. Many people use chalk to do this. They take sidewalk chalk with them wherever they go and write a poem on the sidewalk. The thought behind this idea is that poetry doesn’t simply belong in books or on paper; it belongs everywhere.
To observe Random Acts of Poetry Day, grab some sidewalk chalk, and write a poem on your driveway. It could be a nursery rhyme you learned as a child. You could even try to come up with a poem of your own. Give your kids and others a piece of sidewalk chalk and encourage them to do the same. Get a group of people together and take turns reciting poems in public. Give pre-written verses to random strangers. Ask people what their favorite poem is or their favorite poet.
Another way to celebrate the day is to learn about the different kinds of poems. Take a shot a writing one. You might be a poet and not even know it! Share your favorite poem or an original poem on social media. When doing so, use #RandomActsOfPoetryDay.
