NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP MONTH | November
National Scholarship Month is an annual designation observed in November. Okay, so maybe applying for scholarships isn’t the most exciting way for high schoolers to spend the month before Christmas break, but trust us when we say it’s well worth it. It’s basically free money! This month, seniors (and some juniors, depending on the scholarship) are encouraged to get organized and apply for as many scholarships as possible to help them pay for higher education. If you or your high schooler plans to attend college, here are a few reasons scholarships are essential.
First, college is expensive. Tuition and student loan debt are higher than they’ve ever been before, and paying out of pocket is difficult for many. If you’re able to get even one or two scholarships, it can be a big help to your bank account.
The cost of college living is up. If you want to live on campus to get the entire “college experience,” housing, food, and even books and supplies are now far more expensive than they were when your parents went to college.
Support from the state for college students has decreased by a large amount. Many states are still struggling after the economic slump in 2008, so they have made large cuts to higher education funding. Simply put… You have to pay more just to exist on a college campus.
Over 70 million people are in deep debt. The average college graduate has around $24,000 in debt by the time they graduate, and those numbers are only on the rise. Don’t let it happen to you! Applying for as many scholarships as possible will likely mean you won’t be apart of statistics like these.
