NATIONAL KRAUT SANDWICH WEEK

National Kraut Sandwich Week kicks off a delectable week of stackable innovations. Plan to enjoy veritable variations during the third week in October. Yes, it’s an October Fest feast!

You know it when you smell it. Kraut’s uniquely tangy scent penetrates the room when you open the jar. Sometimes, the flavor overwhelms a dish. However, when paired with the right balance of creaminess and spice, sauerkraut wows and surprises. Served best on a hot sandwich versus a cold one, it can also be an acquired taste. For those who enjoy sauerkraut stacked high, this holiday is for you!

Sauerkraut doesn’t just belong on a Reuben, but that’s an excellent sandwich to start with during this celebration. Other krautwiches to try come in Italian styles with thick slices of seasoned Italian rolls and bologna. Go Spanish with avocado slices and spicy chicken layered with onion and olives.

Of course, if you’re truly celebrating October Fest style, stack your sandwich high with layers of smoked ham, muenster and sauerkraut served hot. Don’t forget a pint to go with it!

NATIONAL KRAUT SANDWICH WEEK HISTORY

In 1980, the National Kraut Packers Association founded this sandwich celebration. It was ideally timed to celebrate October Fests across the country. Sauerkraut is shredded cabbage that is fermented in a lactobacillus bacteria. While cultures across the world incorporate sauerkraut into their cuisine, in Germany, it’s considered a staple food.
