1652

New Amsterdam (now New York City) enacts the first speed limit law in North America. The law prohibited galloping on public streets.

1778

The Liberty Bell returns home to Philadelphia after British depart. The Bell was removed from the city during British occupation to avoid it from being destroyed.

1929

Bell Laboratories performs the first color television demonstration. The transmission was sent from Washington D.C. to New York City showing a bouquet of roses and an American Flag.

1942

The FBI captures eight Nazi saboteurs from a submarine off just off of Long Island. The capture was the failed result of an operation to infiltrate the U.S. by the Nazi's.

1950

The U.S. decides to send troops to fight in the Korean War after North Korea invaded South Korea a few days before.

1955

Illinois becomes the first state to enact seat belt legislation. The law didn't require the driver or passengers to wear them--it required newly manufactured cars to have a point to attach seat belts if the owner of the vehicle chose to add seatbelts to the car.

1972

Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney found Atari, laying the foundation for the gaming industry.

1994

Aerosmith become first major band to let fans download it's music from the internet for free. Despite slow internet speeds, over 10,000 subscribers downloaded the Head First track.
