The first Colonial European representative assembly forms in Jamestown, Virginia. The session lasted six days (July 30 to August 4) and passed tobacco sales measures, along with regulating gambling, drunkenness, and a mandatory Sabbath observance.

The first yacht club is organized in New York when John Cox Stevens and eight friends met aboard his yacht Gimcrack in New York Harbor.

George Eastman shows first amateur color motion pictures, known as Kodacolor, to guests at his New York house. The guestlist included Thomas Edison and General John J. Pershing.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Public Law 689, officially creating the U.S. Navy Women's Reserve. Known as the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), the Law replaced men with women in shore jobs so male sailors could go to sea.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs Public Law 84-140, authorizing In God We Trust as the official motto for the U.S. The motto began appearing on paper money starting with the silver dollar and $1 bills in 1957.

President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Social Security Act of 1965 into law, establishing Medicare and Medicaid for older adults and low-income families.

Jimmy Hoffa disappears from the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, at about 2:30 p.m. He was set to meet mafia crime figures Anthony "Tony Jack" Giacalone and Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano, but the men never showed up. Hoffa have never seen or heard from again.
