A second group of English settlers arrives on Roanoke Island off North Carolina. Made up of 117 settlers, the the group included women and children intended to establish the "Cittie of Raleigh,". However, it was discovered the settlement vanished by 1590 with no clue as to where they went.
Cleveland, OH, is founded by General Moses Cleaveland. The originally spelling for the city was "Cleaveland" but the first "a" was dropped in 1831 by a local newspaper editor to fit the heading in the column.
