The Sedition Act of 1798 becomes law in the U.S. The Act made it a federal crime to write, publish, or utter false or malicious statements about the United States government.

1853

The first major US world's fair opens in New York City. Known as the Exhibition of the Industry of All the Nations, the fair attempted to put American culture and innovation on the world map.

1881

Sheriff Pat Garrett shot and killed outlaw Billy the Kid at Pete Maxwell’s house in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.

1911

President William Howard Taft greets Harry Atwood, an exhibition pilot for the Wright brothers, after he lands his "aeroplane" on the South Lawn of the White House.

1943

The George Washington Carver National Monument becomes the first U.S. National Monument in honor of an African American. The Monument is located in Diamond, Missouri, which is the birthplace and childhood home of Carver.

1960

Jane Goodall arrives at the Gombe Stream Reserve (present-day Tanzania) to begin her study of chimpanzees in the wild.

1965

Mariner 4 captured the first close-up photographs of another planet during its flyby of Mars. Each image took approximately eight hours and 20 minutes to transmit to Earth.

2015

NASA's New Horizons probe performs the first flyby of Pluto. The flyby completes completes the initial survey of the Solar System.
