INTERNATIONAL DROP A ROCK DAY
On July 3rd, International Drop a Rock Day encourages creative inspiration. Paint designs on small rocks then hide them for others to find. Your artwork will bring smiles of delight to whoever finds them.
Each year a different theme is selected. No matter the theme or our artistic skills, the day instills kindness, creativity, fun, and joy in both the artist and the finder. With bright colors and unlimited designs, the day provides an exciting way to bring bits of artwork into the world with an element of surprise.
Finding & Preparing Rocks
- The best rocks to paint fit in the palm of your hand.
- Smooth rocks with a flat surface provide the best surfaces for designs and images.
- Wash and scrub dirt from the surface of the rocks before painting.
- Acrylic paint works best
- Use a variety of brushes, depending on the type of techniques you want to try.
- Seal the design when you are complete
- Hide your finished rocks!
Once you’ve developed your style, experiment with new effects, colors, and applications. Don’t be afraid to work with different themes or rocks, either. If one type of brush doesn’t do the trick, try a makeup sponge or tissue. Paint markers are another option, too. After you’ve mastered a technique share your mad skill with others. Join a rock art club to learn even more ways to paint and celebrate the day.
