On October 3rd, Global Smoothie Day celebrates how smoothies blended with whole foods are an easy and fun way to obtain nutrients. The day also encourages people around the world to drink a smoothie.

Most dietary guidelines recommend eating lots of fruits and vegetables each day. These foods are loaded with nutrients that keep the body healthy. However, if you’re like many people, you probably struggle eating your fruits and veggies. One fun and easy way to get the nutrients these foods provide is by making a smoothie. It doesn’t take a lot of digging on the internet to find some amazingly healthy smoothie recipes.

Most smoothie recipes call for the following kinds of ingredients:

  • Fruit of any kind (berries and bananas work especially well)
  • Veggies, such as spinach or carrots
  • Non-dairy milk, such as almond or oat milk
  • Seeds, such as flax or chia
  • A healthy fat like coconut oil or avocado
  • A protein like plain Greek yogurt

If you have all of these ingredients, you are well on your way to making a healthy and delicious smoothie. To make sure it does not contain a lot of sugar, only 20 percent of your smoothie should be fruit. Also, for the liquid, you should avoid using fruit juice or other sugary drinks. The fun thing about smoothies is that there are numerous combinations of foods to blend together. It’s also fun to see the colors you can get with different ingredients.

If you want, you can drink a smoothie every day. Some people do a smoothie challenge and replace their lunch or dinner with a smoothie for a certain number of days. No matter what you choose to do, today is a great day to start the healthy habit of drinking smoothies.

The best way to observe this day is to make your own smoothie. If you don’t have a blender, drink a smoothie at your local smoothie bar.
