NATIONAL PICK BLUEBERRIES DAY
NATIONAL PICK BLUEBERRIES DAY
National Pick Blueberries Day on July 10th invites us to step outside into the bright summer sunshine, grab a basket, and head to the nearest berry patch! This delicious food holiday falls right in the sweet spot of the mid-summer harvest and blends a fun, family-friendly summer activity with healthy eating, baking recipes, and nature appreciation.
#NationalPickBlueberriesDay
National Pick Blueberries Day celebrates one of nature's most delicious, vibrant, and healthy treasures—the blueberry. Considered by nutritionists to be one of the ultimate superfoods, a handful of blueberries feeds your body with powerful health benefits. They contain some of the highest antioxidant levels of all common fruits and vegetables that helps protect your body from cellular stress.
Eating blueberries regularly lowers blood pressure and improves brain health, especially with sharpening short-term memory and focus. Best of all, they provide a sweet treat packed with Vitamin C and dietary fiber. Did we mention they are perfect for hydration on a hot summer day?
There is a special kind of feeling when you pick your own blueberries. Seeing how they grow naturally on sprawling bushes is a beautiful sight. The silver-white coating that protects the delicate skin of the berry is your clue the berry is fresh and ready to be picked! Whether you buy them fresh from a local berry farm or forage for wild patches of blueberries, today is all about the simple joy of gathering your own food and getting to eat it, too!
HOW TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL PICK BLUEBERRIES DAY
If you're ready to head out for the blueberry harvest, here are a few ideas for you to participate in today's food holiday:
Head to a local fruit orchard or berry farm and spend an hour or two picking your own blueberries to experience the freshest, sweetest fruit available. Don't forget to grab the sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your skin from UV rays.
When picking, look for berries that are entirely blue, right up to the stem. If the berries have a hint of red or green, they aren't quite ripe yet! A fully ripe berry will slide off the branch into your bucket...or mouth. We know tasting is necessary.
After you've picked your berries, take them home and prep them for a blueberry dessert. Whether it’s a classic blueberry pie, a batch of warm muffins, homemade blueberry jam, or a refreshing summer cobbler, this is your time to shine by baking something from scratch today.
Blueberries keep very well in the freezer, which is perfect for enjoying fresh picked berries during the winter. Simply spread them out in a single layer on a baking sheet, freeze them solid, and then transfer them into a freezer bag.
