These first seven U.S. astronauts completed the exhaustive testing process that identified them as the fittest and the most ideal to travel into space. The seven astronauts were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton.
