The Battle of Gettysburg begins. The military battle claimed over 50,000 Union and Confederate casualties.

1870

President Ulysses S. Grant signs legislation creating the U.S. Department of Justice. The law centralized federal legal authority under the Attorney General and created the Office of the Solicitor General.

1874

The first zoo opens in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The zoo featured 1,000 rare and endangered animals and had a 25-cents admission fee.

The first commercially successful typewriter (Sholes and Glidden typewriter) goes on sale. The typewriter was the first to have the QWERTY keyboard layout.

Los Angeles becomes the first city to introduce the a coin operated ice vending machines. Residents could purchase a 25-pound block of ice, making refrigeration and food preservation more accessible.

WWII: Allied forces invade Sicily, leading to the downfall of Mussolini.

"Pay-as-you-go" becomes the first tax withholding from a paycheck is implemented in the U.S. to help remedy the wartime revenue crisis. The tax model required employers to automatically deduct income taxes directly from employee paychecks.

Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) codes are introduced for United States mail to help sort mail more efficiently.

1966

President Lyndon B. Johnson enacted an amendment to the Social Security Act, it established Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance). The amendment allowed Medicare to take effect. Former President Harry S. Truman was issued the first Medicare card during the 1965 bill signing ceremony.

1968

The CIA's Phoenix Program is officially established as "a set of programs that sought to attack and destroy the political infrastructure of the Viet Cong." The program was designed to identify and destroy the Viet Cong (VC) "via infiltration, assassination, torture, capture, counter-terrorism, and interrogation."

WFAN in New York City becomes the world's first all-sports radio station.
