GREAT AMERICAN PIZZA BAKE
The second week in February is time to get your pizza on! The Great American Pizza Bake challenges you to bake your own.
It’s cheaper, about $4.00 a pizza. You can make it the way you like. It’s easy, and you know exactly what’s in it. Check out a frozen pizza, and you’ll see the ingredient list is long and often unpronounceable. And when you know what you and your family like, make your own pizza! Make more than one at a time to stock your freezer with your own ready-to-bake pizzas.
All you need is a thick spicy tomato sauce, pizza dough, and your choice of vegetables and/or meats — Bake at 450°F degrees for 15 minutes. You can even start the day with a ham, egg and cheese breakfast pizzas.
Common ingredients we’ve found: Italian sausage, ground beef, ham, olives, onions, green bell pepper, garlic, onion, mushrooms peppers.
Less common ingredients: zucchini, eggplant,
Weird ingredients we found that are served in California restaurants: Lobster, tuna, grapes, bananas, and even peanut butter.
The weirdest ingredient is from New York: Gold. A restaurant in the financial district of New York City makes a pizza topped with 24-Karat Gold. The price tag? $2,000.
HOW TO OBSERVE #GreatAmericanPizzaBake
Check out a pantry-full of pizza recipes on the internet. Make a large batch of pizza dough, refrigerate, and use a portion throughout the month for your own pizza creations.
Hold a pizza-making party. You supply the dough and sauce. Your guests bring their favorite toppings. Assemble, bake for 15 minutes. Mix and match.
