NATIONAL NAME YOUR POISON DAY
National Name Your Poison Day on June 8th each year recognizes the important decisions we make. Over the years, bartenders have been known to use the phrase, “name your poison,” when asking patrons what they would like to drink. This observance celebrates that phrase and is also a way to commemorate any big decisions or choices we make.
Decisions come in all shapes and forms. Whether they are difficult or easy ones, we make them all the time. Even the most inconsequential choices may cause us to scratch our heads. From the clothes we choose to wear in the morning or an item to order from a menu to those bigger decisions like who to vote for at election time, we make decisions big and small.
Most of our decisions don’t seem to be very poisonous, sometimes all our options so is leave a bad taste in our mouth. While the origin of the phrase “name your poison” is unknown, many believe its first use referred to making choices from a poor collection of options. It suggests no matter whichever selection was made it would be a bad one. Hence, the word “poison” in the phrase.
