WORLD MUSIC DAY

JUN 21

Music fills streets, parks, plazas, porches, rooftops, and neighborhoods around the world on June 21st as World Music Day, also known as Make Music Day, brings people together through the universal language of song.

WORLD MUSIC DAY | MAKE MUSIC DAY

World Music Day is a global celebration of music in all its forms. Whether you play an instrument, sing in a choir, hum in the car, perform professionally, or simply enjoy listening, this day invites everyone to take part.

Also known by its French name, Fête de la Musique, World Music Day is different from a traditional music festival. The celebration is built around one simple idea: music should be everywhere, and everyone should be welcome. Instead of ticketed performances behind closed doors, the day encourages free public concerts and spontaneous performances in community spaces.

On June 21st, musicians of every age and skill level step into the spotlight. Amateur guitar players may perform next to seasoned jazz musicians. School bands, church choirs, drum circles, folk groups, DJs, orchestras, rappers, and singer-songwriters all become part of one worldwide soundtrack.

Music Everywhere

Music is one of the oldest ways humans connect. Long before playlists and streaming services, people used rhythm, voice, and instruments to tell stories, pass down traditions, celebrate milestones, and bring communities together.

Every culture has its own musical fingerprint. A lullaby, a marching band, a fiddle tune, a drumbeat, a hymn, a symphony, or a street performer’s song can all tell us something about who we are and where we come from. Music can be joyful, healing, rebellious, peaceful, nostalgic, or downright impossible not to dance to.

World Music Day celebrates that variety. It reminds us that music does not belong only on a stage. It belongs in neighborhoods, schools, libraries, workplaces, senior centers, sidewalks, and backyards. It belongs wherever people gather.

And the best part? You do not need to be famous to participate. On World Music Day, the garage band, the grandparent at the piano, the kid learning ukulele, and the professional musician all get the same invitation: make music.

HOW TO OBSERVE WORLD MUSIC DAY

Attend a free concert or local Make Music Day event in your community. Support local musicians by sharing their music, buying their albums or merchandise, or leaving a kind review. Pick up an instrument you have not played in years, or try learning a new one.

Create a neighborhood jam session, sing with friends, build a playlist of music from around the world, or introduce someone younger to a favorite artist. Schools, libraries, music stores, parks, and community organizations can celebrate by hosting open performances or music workshops.

You can also celebrate by listening with intention. Choose music from a country, culture, or genre you do not know well. Music has a wonderful way of opening doors before we even realize we were standing in front of one.

HISTORY OF WORLD MUSIC DAY

World Music Day began in France as Fête de la Musique. In 1982, France’s Ministry of Culture launched the first nationwide celebration on June 21st, the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.

The idea grew from a desire to bring music out into public spaces and encourage musicians of all kinds to perform. French cultural leaders recognized that many people played instruments or made music privately, but only a small portion of them appeared in formal concerts. Fête de la Musique gave those musicians a reason to step outside and share their talents.

The name Fête de la Musique carries a playful double meaning in French. It means “festival of music,” while also sounding like “make music.” That spirit still guides the celebration today.

Over the decades, the event spread far beyond France. Today, World Music Day and Make Music Day events take place in cities around the world, creating a shared day of free, public music each year on June 21st.
