Recipe of the Day

Name: Pecan PiePrep: 15 minutes
Cook: 45 minutes
Total Prep: 60 minutes
Servings: 6-8
Ingredients:1 cup brown sugar
1 1/4 cup corn syrup
4 eggs, beaten
4 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cup pecans

Instructions:Preheat oven to 350°. Mix brown sugar and corn syrup in a medium saucepan. Boil until sugar melts.  In a medium bowl mix eggs, butter, vanilla, and pecans.  Slowly pour the sugar mixture into the egg mixture. Beat together. Pour into pie crust and bake 45 minutes.

1933 

The Pittsburgh Steelers play their debut game in the National Football League. With a score of 23-2, the Steelers lost to the New York Giants.

1946 

The first complete International Film Festival at Cannes, France opened. Originally scheduled to open in 1939, World War II cut the event short with only one film being shown. Twenty-one countries submitted entries for the first festival. One of the winning entries included the British comedy, Brief Encounter. Best Actor went to Ray Milland for his role in The Lost Weekend and Best Animation Design was awarded to Make Mine Music.

1962

RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 is unveiled from Clydebank, Scotland.

2004 

The Piano Man, Billy Joel, receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

2005 

Some names are more common than you think. In 2005, 164 people named Martha Stewart joined the television set of the show Martha! to break a world record for the number of people with the same first and last name gathered in the same place. Martha, Martha, Martha! 

2015

The HBO drama, Game of Thrones, runs away with record-breaking 12 Emmy wins.

September 20th Celebrated Birthdays

Carleton Ellis – 1875

The prolific inventor patented more than 700 inventions and is credited with a long list of successful creations. As a chemist, plastic and petroleum became his medium. One of his most notable contributions was the development of margarine.

Upton Sinclair – 1878

Best known for his novel The Jungle, Sinclair would later earn a Pulitzer Prize for his work, Dragon’s Teeth.

Jay Ward – 1920

Ward is best known for producing animated series featuring Rocky & Bullwinkle, Dudley Do-Right, Peabody and Sherman among others.

Dorothy Johnson Vaughan – 1910

The mathematician is best known for her work on the SCOUT Launch Vehicle Program for NASA. The film Hidden Figures features Vaughn along with several other African American Women who worked for NASA.

Ruth Richard – 1928

The left-hander played eight seasons in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. The stellar catcher also played in exhibition games in South and Central America.
