• WORLD PALOMA DAY – May 22

WORLD PALOMA DAY | MAY 22

On May 22nd, World Paloma Day recognizes the national drink of Mexico. This refreshing cocktail made with tequila and grapefruit soda is definitely worth celebrating!

    #WorldPalomaDay

The growing reputation of the Paloma in the United States may be related to its sparkling personality. The vibrant flavor and bright citrus notes combined with a light, energetic flare makes the Paloma a celebration drink.

However, where and when the Paloma began is a bit of mystery. In 1938, the first grapefruit soda came on the scene in the United States. From there, the soda made its way to Mexico in 1955. Whoever first mixed tequila, lime, and grapefruit soda brought together an undeniably beautiful and delightful beverage.

The Paloma’s shimmering character is just one reason it is the most popular cocktail in Mexico. Easily mixed in large batches to serve in a pitcher for company, the Paloma complements a summer cookout, as well as a more formal affair.

HOW TO OBSERVE World Paloma Day

On World Paloma Day, order a Paloma tonight, mix one up yourself or make a pitcher to share with friends. To enjoy at home, try this recipe:

    2 oz Cenote Blanco Tequila
    1⁄2 oz Fresh lime juice
    Grapefruit soda, to top

Garnish – lime wedge or grapefruit wedge
Add tequila and lime juice to a highball glass filled with ice.
Fill with grapefruit soda, and stir briefly.

Use #WorldPalomaDay to share on social media.

Always drink responsibly and don’t drink and drive. Designate a sober driver.

  • NATIONAL DIVE BAR DAY – July 7

NATIONAL DIVE BAR DAY | JULY 7

On July 7th, raise a toast to the place where friends gather and memories are made. It’s National Dive Bar Day!

    #NationalDiveBarDay

From the one-time speakeasy to the little hole-in-the-wall, the dive bar is like an old pair of jeans; it just fits right. During the week, we can stop in, our team will be playing on the TV, and the beverages will be icy cold. The same dart and pool leagues meet every year, and familiar faces go head to head.

Dive bars last. On Friday nights, even their sweethearts still show up for date nights at the beach shack where they met 20 years ago. If we drive the back roads of small towns, the dive bar serves the best steaks for miles around.

The dive bar is more than just a place to kick back and relax. It’s where we mark out life’s plans, celebrate its successes, and make memories to treasure. We make friends who become family and remember those who have left us behind.

This holiday is about the first place to come to mind when it’s time to celebrate, to hang out with friends or just feel at home once again. We may use the term dive bar with a bit of fondness, however, many of these places have been around a long time. “I remember when…” is a familiar phrase heard often enough. Raise a toast to the bars and pubs where they know us and take care of us.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL DIVE BAR DAY

Join Seagram’s 7 Crown and visit your favorite local dive bar. Have a 7&7 on 7/7 or your beverage of choice and give them a shout out. Be sure to bring your friend and share your memories, too. Make sure to use #NationalDiveBarDay to share on social media. If you stay home, try these cocktail shakers for home use.

**Always drink responsibly and designate a sober driver.

    NATIONAL DIVE BAR DAY HISTORY

Seagram’s Seven Crown founded National Dive Bar Day on July 7th to honor all the dive bars around the country and to recognize them as an American past time that will never die. Seagram’s Seven Crown strives to help preserve the dive bar, those places with lasting personality, who take care of their own. Through historic preservation initiatives, Seagram’s 7 supports the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

  • NATIONAL DRUNK & DRUGGED DRIVING PREVENTION MONTH – December

NATIONAL DRUNK & DRUGGED DRIVING PREVENTION MONTH

National Drunk & Drugged Driving Prevention Month, or National 3D Prevention Month in December serves as a reminder to never drive impaired. If you’re home or traveling during the holidays, you may be planning to go to a few parties, get-togethers, or even just to have a few drinks with the family. If you have been drinking or are under the influence of drugs, do not operate a vehicle. Remember, you are committing the crime of impaired driving whenever your ability to operate a vehicle is impaired by the effects of illegal drugs, prescription medication, over-the-counter medication, or a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 grams per deciliter or higher. If you are taking part in activities like this month, or EVER, do not make the mistake of getting behind the wheel. It could cost you or someone else their life.

So, why now? The time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is described by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals as “One of the deadliest and most dangerous times on America’s roadways due to an increase in impaired driving.” This month we are all encouraged to drive sober, and defensively.

    HOW TO OBSERVE #DrunkDruggedDrivingPreventionMonth #3DPreventionMonth

Do not drive while you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It puts not only you at risk, but everyone else around you. Think before you act. Use #DrunkDruggedDrivingPreventionMonth or #3DPreventionMonth to post on social media.

Accidents caused by driving under the influence are, of course, totally preventable. This year and every year to follow, commit to act responsibly and drive safely. Here are a few tips to keep in the back of your mind as you attend holiday parties and other get-togethers this year.

    1. Always plan ahead. Designate a sober driver, and arrange for an alternative route home just in case.
    2. If you are a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or even friend, talk to your loved ones to remind them how important it is to be responsible and stay safe.
    3. If you are the one hosting the party, always offer a non-alcoholic option for drinks for your guests so they can still have a good time eating and drinking with everyone else!

NATIONAL DRUNK & DRUGGED DRIVING PREVENTION MONTH HISTORY

Every president of the United States since the year 1981 has shown a commitment to stopping impaired driving by proclaiming December as National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month.

  • MADD TIE ONE ON FOR SAFETY HOLIDAY CAMPAIGN – November 16 through December 31

MADD Tie One On For Safety Holiday Campaign - November

MADD TIE ONE ON FOR SAFETY

The MADD Tie One On For Safety Holiday Campaign kicks off the festive season by reminding us that drinking and driving don’t mix.  From November 16 to December 31, their MADD Tie One On For Safety Holiday Campaign urges you to designate a sober driver and to hand over your keys. It’s more important to get home late and alive, than to risk driving drunk or even buzzed.

Keep your holiday celebrations enjoyable by preventing tragedy. When you designate, you are more likely to get home safely to the ones you love. Every year, hundreds of families receive a knock at the door informing them a loved one was taken from them due to a senseless decision made under the influence of alcohol. The decision is 100 percent preventable.

Make it a habit when celebrating.

    • Give your sober driver a red ribbon.
    • Hostesses provide non-alcoholic drinks for sober drivers, so your guests get home safely.
    • Offer the spare bedroom or sofa in a pinch.
    • Take turns being the sober driver.
    • Keep a reliable taxi or driver service on your phone.

    HOW TO OBSERVE #TieOneOnForSafety

Designate a sober driver and don’t drink and drive. Support awareness by donating to MADD. Use #MADDTieOneOnForSafety to share on social media.

TIE ONE ON FOR SAFETY HISTORY

MAAD founded their Tie One On For Safety Holiday Campaign in 1983 to raise awareness and help prevent drunk driving deaths. The number of traffic-related deaths caused by drunk drivers increases during the holiday season.

  • WORLD MARTINI DAY – June 19

    WORLD MARTINI DAY

On June 19th, shake up some gin and vermouth with ice and add a lemon twist. It’s World Martini Day!

This adult beverage has grown to become one of the best-known mixed drinks. A traditional or perfect Martini is made with equal parts gin and vermouth. For anyone who has never had a Martini, we have a list of terms to help get you started.

    Martini Lingo
    • Dirty – This Martini includes olive brine or juice from the olive jar.
    • Dry – The vermouth is decreased significantly in the Martini, and gin becomes the primary spirit. Extra dry tips the ratio even further.
    • Gibson – Instead of an olive, bartenders garnish the Martini with a pickled onion.
    • Shaken vs. Stirred – Most bartenders will tell you that the better Martini is stirred. Shaken Martinis tend to be inferior due to a couple of reasons – ice chips water down the drink, and shaking the Martini adds air to the cocktail. A stirred Martini results in a smoother, fuller experience.
    • Straight Up – This Martini may be either shaken or stirred, but it is strained and served without ice – the opposite of a Martini on the rocks.
    • Smoky or Burnt – Scotch whisky replaces the vermouth in this Martini. A twist of lemon garnishes the glass.
    • Wet – Where the dry Martini has less vermouth, this one has more.
    • With a Twist – The bartender adds a thin strip of citrus peel to the Martini as a garnish or in the drink.

Shaken, stirred, on the rocks, that’s what you need to know to order traditional Martinis.

James Bond, the fictional spy, sometimes asked for his vodka Martinis to be “shaken, not stirred.”

When the James Bond movies debuted in the late 1960s, the popularity of the Martini increased. In the later decades, clear spirits like vodka overtook aged spirits like bourbon in market share. However, in recent decades, a balancing act seems to be taking place.

Dirty martini – Martini with a splash of olive brine or olive juice and is typically garnished with an olive.

Over the years, the traditional Martini inspired a variety of other cocktails such as the Cosmopolitan, chocolatini, or appletini.

    HOW TO OBSERVE #WorldMartiniDay

Order your favorite Martini or Martini-inspired cocktail. Martinis are an excellent cocktail to serve at a small gathering with hors d’oeuvres. Whether you serve a meat and cheese tray or go all out with shrimp, stuffed mushrooms and patè, make it a night to remember. (Remember always to drink responsibly and to designate a sober driver.)

Other fun ways to celebrate the day include:

    • Hosting a cocktail class to learn how to make classic cocktails.
    • Reading a book about the history of bartending.
    • Visiting a local cocktail bar with authentic turn of the 20th-century details.
    • Watching a documentary about the Martini or other famous cocktails.

Use #NationalMartiniDay to share on social media.

    SEPTEMBER HOLIDAYS AND HISTORY

The ninth month of the calendar year ushers in a host of Autumn loving holidays.

Before the Julian and Gregorian calendars, September was the 7th month of the Roman calendar. Septem means seven in Latin. At the time, there were only 10 months. In 700 BC, Numa Pompilius added January and February to the calendar. This change more accurately reflected the length of a year on Earth. As a result, September became the 9th month on the calendar.

    Weather & Seasons

While September sees a downtick in the number of outdoorsy days, that doesn’t mean you can’t get outside and enjoy the waning days of summer. September is the first month of fall in the Northern Hemisphere and the first month of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. September’s full moon is appropriately named the Harvest Moon. However, the Harvest Moon occasionally lands in October because this full moon is so named. After all, it’s the closest one to the autumnal equinox in September. When the Harvest Moon lands in October, September’s full moon is named the Corn Moon.

Two lesser meteor showers occur in September. The first is the Aurigids and the second is ∈Perseids (not to be confused with the Perseid meteor shower in August).

    What’s Your Sign?

The Earth sign Virgo (represented by the goddess of wheat) and the air sign Libra (represented by scales) are the zodiac signs for September. Two flowers represent September birthdays. The Aster blooms in purple, pink, red, and white. This fall flower blooms in September and attracts migrating butterflies. Another flower representing September births is the morning glory. It blooms all summer long and up to the first frost. Finally, glittery, blue sapphires are September’s birthstone.

    5 Fast Facts

    1. If you’re born in September, you might share a birthday with Herman Melville, Gloria Estefan, Keanu Reeves, Salma Hayek, Harry Connick Jr., Lance Armstrong, H.G. Wells, or Anne Burrell. So celebrate your September birthday by finding the holiday you share.

    2. September is the only month with the same number of letters in its name as its numerical place on the calendar.

    3. In 1752, the British switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. The adjustment caused rioting. Why? The change caused the loss of 11 days between September 2 and September 14. They were probably all born between those dates, too.

    4. Only one U.S. president was born in September – William Taft.

    5. Only one president was assassinated in September – William McKinley.
