National Walk to School Day First Wednesday in October

NATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

National Walk to School Day is observed annually on the first Wednesday in October. This is a day to get out and get some exercise while enjoying the weather.

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise. It isn’t hard on our joints and feet like running and jogging but still gives us all the advantages.

The goal of this day is to raise awareness and support for the health, community and environmental benefits of regularly walking or biking to school.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Walk to school or work. Enjoy the weather. Take photos and post on social media using #walktoschoolday.

HISTORY

Organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America, Walk to School Day in the USA began in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities.

National Techies Day October 3

NATIONAL TECHIES DAY

National Techies Day is observed annually on October 3.  During National Techies Day, students are encouraged to consider a career in technology.

In California, the birthplace of many modern technological innovations, the 2012 report Technology Works: High-Tech Employment and Wages in the United States by the Bay Area Council Economic Institute commissioned by Engine Advocacy concluded that for every high-tech job four more are created.

In the United States, tech jobs are predicted to grow 22% by 2020.  While the types of technology positions range from healthcare and administration, software development to information security, this job sector is still on the rise.

Consider that National Techies Day falls during National Cyber Security Awareness Month.  If all your devices are locked down and secure, thank a techie.  If it’s not, find one and get some help getting it secure!

HOW TO OBSERVE

Take a techie out to lunch! Use #NationalTechiesDay to post on social media.

HISTORY

In 1999, it was expected that 60% of new jobs would require advanced technology skills that Americans didn’t have. Techies.com and CNET Networks launched National Techies Day to encourage kids to embrace computer science and even the monikers that are sometimes attached to contemporary technology.  Being a computer nerd or geek, even like National Day Calendar’s own Guru of Geek, in the fast-growing world of technology opens doors to career opportunities.

National Coffee with a Cop Day - First Wednesday in October

NATIONAL COFFEE WITH A COP DAY

On the third Wednesday in October, National Coffee with a Cop Day brings men and women in uniform together with their communities to connect over a cup of joe.

Inspired by the cliche about officers and their coffee shop donuts, National Coffee with a Cop Day encourages communities to sponsor an event that will bring citizens and those on patrol together. The opportunity for open dialogue, break down barriers and improve communication creates a valuable bridge to relationships in our communities.

HOW TO OBSERVE

While many cities and towns across the country hold Coffee with a Cop events throughout the year, the third Wednesday in October is National Coffee with a Cop Day. Plan one now and several later in the year!

HISTORY

In 2016, the first National Coffee with a Cop Day took place across the nation. The idea was launched by the members of the Hawthorne Police Department in Hawthorne, California in 2011. They sought ways to interact with their community every day more successfully. As a result, they established a Coffee with a Cop events to do just that. Throughout the year they make meaningful connections, and the idea has spread across the country to all 50 states!

NATIONAL PUMPKIN SEED DAY

As the temperatures cool and the leaves turn, the season becomes perfect on the first Wednesday in October to enjoy National Pumpkin Seed Day!

Many of us have fond memories of roasting these delicious nuggets after carving the Jack o’ lantern, but most of us never realized just how good (and good for us) they were. But surprisingly, pumpkin seeds have been valued for their dietary and medicinal properties for thousands of years. In fact, pumpkin seeds have been traced back as far as 7000 BC, according to archeologists excavating a tomb in central Mexico.

Among other civilizations, the Aztecs and Mayans were believed to revere pumpkin seeds as an important and powerful source of food and nutrition. As it turns out they were on to something – In a comparison to other nuts and seeds, Pumpkin Seeds are one of the most nutritious plant-based foods. A quarter cup serving alone includes an immune-boosting 17% of an adult’s daily allowance of zinc and a powerful red blood cell-supporting 15% of the iron needed.

This little seed also has a whopping 8.5 grams of complete plant-based protein in just 1 ounce. Ounce for ounce, that’s 2.5 times more protein than a hard-boiled egg. These flavorful bites have much more to offer including a plentiful helping of minerals with over 40% of the RDI of magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese, essential nutrients that aid in overall body function.

Pumpkin seeds without shells, also known as pepitas, provide an even better standalone snack especially those that are dry roasted and with flavor. They also make great additions to salads, oatmeal, and even ice cream. Mix them into baked goods for added crunch or to granola and bars for extra protein. Don’t hesitate to elevate a savory dish to a new level by creating a pesto with pumpkin seeds.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Move pumpkins seeds from your memories file and over to your daily file.  They really shouldn’t be a sometimes food anymore!  Try them in this Maple Buckwheat Flapjack Recipe in this Asian Slaw Recipe from SuperSeedz. Use #NationalPumpkinSeedDay to share on social media.

HISTORY

SuperSeedz Gourmet Pumpkin Seeds founded National Pumpkin Seed Day to share all the wonderful benefits of pumpkin seeds and the ways they can be enjoyed.  A woman-owned company, Kathie Pelliccio founded SuperSeedz in her kitchen with a cast iron pan making healthy pumpkin seeds to add to salads, yogurt, and oatmeal. The Registrar at National Day Calendar approved the day in July of 2016.
