We’re heading into the official start of summer with Memorial Weekend! National Day Calendar lists all the upcoming food holidays in handy National Day Flavor menu.  Perfect for the weekend, we start off with National Hamburger Day and National Brisket Day.  Another BBQ favorite later in the week is National Rotisserie Chicken Day.  If you enjoy hazelnuts or macaroons, this week is for you.  And who can resist Rocky Road?

National Hamburger Day May 28

NATIONAL HAMBURGER DAY

National Hamburger Day is observed each year on May 28.  This day celebrates a summer-time grilling favorite and National Hamburger Day is part of National Hamburger Month.

Hamburger.  Seasoned ground beef, grilled and placed between two slices of bread or a bun. Top with sauteed onions, peppers, pickles, sliced onions, or cheese. Add condiments such as ketchup, mustard or mayo. Any one of these combinations would create a modern American version a hamburger.

It is most likely that the hamburger sandwich first appeared in the 19th or early 20th centuries, but there is much controversy over its origin. Over the years, the hamburger has become a culinary icon in the United States.

The world’s largest hamburger was prepared on September 2, 2012, in Carlton, Minnesota by Black Bear Casino Resort and weighed in at 2,014 pounds.

The Flavor of...Grilling!

Are you dedicated to charcoal or the convenience of propane? Whatever your preference, purists of one form or another exists and this weekend will bring out most of them.

Open flame provides added seasoning to our cooking. After a long winter, our palates eagerly await the mouthwatering delights summer brings. From summer kickoff to National Tailgating Day and beyond, whether it’s fresh vegetables, seafood or seasonal fruits and tantalizing spices, it’s grilling season.  Let the flavors hit the fire!

BLEU CHEESE BURGERS FOR A CROWD

¹⁄³ cup mayo
1 tbsp lemon juice
¹⁄³ cup sour cream
dash Worcestershire
¹⁄³ cup bleu cheese crumbles
salt and pepper to taste

2 lb ground beef (87% lean)
2 eggs
1 tbsp Worcestershire
1 clove minced garlic
¼ cup bread crumbs
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper

Mix the first set of ingredients to make the dressing in a small bowl and chill.

In a medium bowl, mix ground beef with remaining ingredients and divide into 8 patties.  Place patties on hot grill. When burgers are ready, place on buns and add 1-2 tablespoons of dressing.
