INTERNATIONAL STOUT DAY

On the first Thursday in November, International Stout Day celebrates this unique kind of beer. The day also recognizes the brewers who craft stout for the masses.

Stout is a dark, top-fermented type of beer known for its creamy and robust flavor. It’s also known for its rich dark color. Some stouts are so dark; they are almost black thanks to a black patent malt. People first started brewing stouts in the 1700s. They developed the stout from porters, which is a dark ale.

There are two main categories of stout: sweet and dry. Sweet stouts are made with lactose derived from milk. They were first made in the United Kingdom. Dry stouts, also called Irish stouts, were first made in Ireland using roasted barley. Other kinds of stout include:

  • Oatmeal
  • Oyster
  • Coffee
  • Pastry
  • Barrel-aged
  • Chocolate
  • Imperial

One thing that makes stout different from other beers is the temperature at which it’s served. Regular beer is typically served at approximately 42°F. Stout, on the other hand, is usually served between 50 and 55°F. Because it’s served at a warmer temperature, stout is a great beverage to drink when it’s cold outside.

HOW TO OBSERVE #InternationalStoutDay

On this day, bars and breweries around the world offer specials on their stout beer. In addition, craft beer breweries hold stout-making demonstrations. One of the best ways to celebrate the day is by inviting friends to join you for a round of stout at the local pub. Other ways to participate include:
