INTERNATIONAL ASMR DAY
Every year on April 9th, International ASMR Day spreads awareness for a perceptual phenomenon called Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. It’s also a day to focus on the various sounds and images that cause this tingling sensation in humans.
Have you ever had a tingling sensation that begins in your head, moves down your spine, and spreads through the rest of your body? If so, you have had an Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR). This sensation isn’t a weird or scary feeling. Instead, many people who have had an ASMR find it to be a good and relaxing feeling.
According to psychologists, this feeling is most often triggered in socially intimate settings. Repetitive movements or sounds are what often cause the pleasurable feeling. Examples of these triggers include watching someone brush their hair or listening to whispers. Online communities first started reporting ASMR episodes in 2010. It’s not known exactly how many people experience ASMR. According to one study, anywhere from 20 to 70 percent of the population experiences ASMR. Those who don’t ever feel this sensation have a hard time believing it’s real.
People who have had episodes of ASMR find the sensation relaxing. Because of this, many companies have made ASMR videos that target this particular audience. These videos include people slowly folding towels and sorting baseball cards. Other videos are role-playing situations in which the host simulates the act of giving the viewer a haircut or beauty treatment. Those who experience ASMR also embrace certain artists, such as Billie Eilish, who often sings in a soft, whispery voice. Promoters of ASMR say videos that contain these elements can help people destress and sleep better.
HOW TO OBSERVE #InternationalASMRDay
