How will you celebrate National DNA Day? Many will participate in a science project or read an article about DNA sequencing. Since the completion of the human DNA sequence, numerous books have been written about the actual project, studies surrounding DNA studies and the benefits and pitfalls.
New data arrives every day, too. Some of the most fascinating relate to astronaut Commander Scott Kelly’s DNA changes after a year in space. Being a twin, he was a perfect subject to study the effects of space on the human body.
DNA answered a few questions but created so many more. Studies around the world endeavor to answer them. Perhaps they will cure disease or discover the cause.
Other still pursue DNA from a historical perspective, or perhaps a familial one. Whether DNA testing “for the fun of it” or to increase opportunities to enrich a family tree, there are warnings to be heeded here, too.
However you observe National DNA Day, be sure to save a little celebrating for next year. You never know when you need a little DNA.
