  • WORLD RADIOGRAPHY DAY – November 8

    WORLD RADIOGRAPHY DAY

On November 8th, World Radiography Day marks the anniversary of the discovery of the X-ray. The day also recognizes the important role that radiographers and radiologists play in the health care industry.

The first thing a doctor does when a patient breaks a bone is order an X-ray. This kind of medical imaging allows healthcare professionals to see what is going on inside the body. The painless diagnostic test uses a form of electromagnetic radiation that passes through objects.

Besides bone fractures, X-rays also detects:

    • Tumors
    • Enlarged heart
    • Blood vessel blockages
    • Fluid in lungs
    • Dislocated joints
    • Internal infections
    • Osteoporosis
    • Tooth decay
    • Foreign objects in the body

The benefits of X-rays include being completely non-invasive and taking only a few minutes to complete. Doctors like X-rays because the results can be seen almost immediately. Radiographers perform X-rays and once the test is performed, the results are analyzed by a radiologist. The radiologist then passes that information to the doctor. In some instances, radiographers need to use other kinds of medical imaging tests to diagnose a problem. These might include a CT Scan, MRI, fluoroscopy, mammography, or ultrasound.

Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen, a German mechanical engineer and physicist, discovered X-rays in 1895. He received the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901 for his discovery. The Polish-born physicist Marie Curie helped advance the X-ray using radium, an element she discovered. In the early 1900s, hospitals were already using X-ray technology. By the 1930s, X-rays were a routine part of patient diagnostics. Today, around 3.6 million diagnostic tests that use radiation in medical imaging are performed each year. Up to 80 percent of diagnostic problems are resolved with the help of X-rays.

    HOW TO OBSERVE #WorldRadiographyDay

On this day, radiographer associations and healthcare providers host events that educate the public about X-rays and radiation safety. Radiographers also hold conferences and seminars to share ideas and make improvements in their field. It’s also a day for global health organizations to advocate for the need to increase radiography access and improve quality in developing countries. To participate:

    • Thank a radiographer or radiologist for all that they do.
    • Learn more about radiation and how this energy works to produce an X-ray.
    • Read about Marie Curie and Raymond Vahan Damadian and their contributions to radiography.

  • WORLD URBANISM DAY – November 8

    WORLD URBANISM DAY

On November 8th, World Urbanism Day recognizes and promotes the role of planning and creating livable communities. The day is also known as World Town Planning Day.

The word urbanism describes how inhabitants of urban areas interact with the built environment. Urban areas are towns, cities, and other places with higher populations. The primary focus of urban planning is to make the community healthy and livable for its inhabitants. Urban planning also ensures orderly development.

    • The most livable and healthy communities share these common factors:
    • Provide residents with plenty of opportunities to enjoy a high quality of life.
    • Strive to preserve or improve its economy and the quality of its environment.
    • Desire to improve the health of its residents.
    • Provide a variety of housing options for its residents.
    • Include lots of areas for walking, biking, and being outdoors.
    • Make public transportation readily available and affordable for all who need it.
    • Contain schools, grocery stores, shopping malls, parks, recreational areas, and fitness facilities.
    • When all of these factors are present, societies are better able to cope with population growth and climate changes.

Some of the world’s most healthy and livable cities include Osaka, Tokyo, Perth, Zurich, Geneva, Melbourne, and Brisbane. The city that tops the list is Auckland, New Zealand. Town planners in these cities must be doing a great job! On the other end of the spectrum, the least livable cities include Tripoli, Algiers, Dhaka, Port Moresby and Lagos. The least livable city in the world is Damascus, Syria.

    HOW TO OBSERVE #WorldUrbanismDay

Planning associations around the world organize educational events to help the public better understand the importance of urban planning. During such events, residents are encouraged to connect with public health networks and get involved in urban planning projects in their communities. To participate:

    • Develop ideas to improve things in your community, for example, better accessibility for the disabled or more walking paths.
    • Get involved in urban planning by going to city council and county commissioner meetings.
    • Read about influential urbanists, such as Jane Jacobs, Lewis Mumford, Robert Moses, and Naomi Klein.
    • Find out where your community ranks on healthy and livable cities.

  • NATIONAL HARVEY WALLBANGER DAY – November 8

    NATIONAL HARVEY WALLBANGER DAY

National Harvey Wallbanger Day on November 8th recognizes a fruity and spirited cocktail made with 3 parts vodka, 1 part Galliano and 6 parts orange juice. Pour it into a highball glass and garnish it with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry.

    #HarveyWallbangerDay

In 1968 at a chili tasting in San Diego, hosts served Harvey Wallbangers along with a story explaining the cocktail’s origin. According to the story, all that remained of a Laguna Beach party included vodka, Galliano, and orange juice. When the party-goers left, Harvey remained, banging his head against the wall.

    Donato ‘Duke’ Antone

However, accepted lore three-time-world-champion bartender, Donato ‘Duke’ Antone, deserves the credit for the cocktail’s invention. He operated Duke’s Blackwatch Bar on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Over the years, Antone collected quite a few credits for famous beverages. As a bartender, his resume was impressive – inventor of the Rusty Nail, White Russian, and Flaming Russian. According to the bartending wizard, in 1952, a surfer named Tony Wallbanger inspired the cocktail. Perhaps, the party in Laguna Beach is a version of Antone’s. However, no one has been able to identify the inspirational surfer.

Harvey Wallbanger remained a quiet little secret in the San Diego area until around 1968. Then George Bednar, a marketing director for McKesson Imports Company (the maker of Galliano), joined up with graphic artist Bill Young. Their marketing campaign launched a Harvey Wallbanger character that exploded into commercial popularity in the late 1960s and 1970s.

Harvey Wallbanger is the name and I can be made! ~ 1969 Galliano marketing slogan

The drink’s name became a metaphor to describe someone who goofs off or makes mistakes. When politicians or sports figures find themselves in compromising positions, they may earn the name Harvey Wallbanger. And it’s also interesting to note that voters write in Harvey Wallbanger at election time.

HOW TO OBSERVE HARVEY WALLBANGER DAY

Call some of your friends to get together. Meet them at your local bar, and everyone orders a Harvey Wallbanger. Raise your glasses and toast a Happy National Harvey Wallbanger Day!!  (Remember always to drink responsibly and never to drink and drive). Use #HarveyWallbangerDay to post on social media.

    NATIONAL CAPPUCCINO DAY

National Cappuccino Day on November 8th whips up a frothy, hot cup of cappuccino. It’s a perfect drink on a frosty morning, meeting with friends or just to enjoy a creamy cuppa.

    #CappuccinoDay

Traditionally prepared with espresso, hot milk, and steamed milk foam, a cappuccino is an Italian coffee drink.

The word cappuccino comes from the Capuchin friars and is the diminutive form of cappuccio in Italian, meaning hood or something that covers the head. This popular coffee beverage got its name not from the hood on their habits but from the color of the hooded robes that the friars wore.  (The Capuchin friars is an Order of friars in the Catholic Church, among the chief offshoots of the Franciscans.)

    • In 1945, Achille Gaggia invented the modern espresso machine which further popularized the cappuccino.
    • Mid-1990s – Cappuccino was made more widely available to North Americans as upscale coffee houses sprang up.
    • Late 1990s to Early 2000s – Cappuccinos became popular in the United States concurrent with the boom in the American coffee industry.
    • The start of the 21st Century – A modified short-cut version of the cappuccino started being served at fast-food chains.
    • While steaming the milk you must pay close attention to attain the correct ratio of foam, thus making the cappuccino one of the most difficult espresso-based beverages to make properly.
    • A skilled barista may create artistic shapes while he/she is pouring milk on top of the espresso coffee.
