National Day Calendar Classroom - Week 39 - May, 2019

As we head into the summer months, the classroom wants to celebrate National Scavenger Hunt Day. We’ve created our own scavenger hunt called Confetti Trails to wrap up the end of the school year. We also hope you will join as we plan a summer session with you. Not only will there be more puzzles, games, and projects, but National Day Calendar will continue to strive to incorporate more of YOUR ideas into our classroom!

Don’t forget, the classroom includes puzzles and trivia to keep things interesting. The archive contains projects from previous celebrations, so be sure to check those out, too.

Sharing on social media isn’t required; learning is. But if you do, please use #NDCClassroom to share on social media.

Classrooms often spark lively debate on just about every topic. Our schools are rich sources of information and excellent environments to develop listening and communication skills needed for compassion. National Decency Day embraces this ideal. This week in the classroom, download the attached Decency discussion prompts to inspire some friendly debates in your classroom. Practice the ABCs throughout the debates and Decency will become a refreshing part of your curriculum.DECENCY in Classroom Visit the Decency.Today website to learn more.

    CLASSROOM | WEEK 37 | May 5, 2019

For National Teacher Appreciation Day, the classroom is sending huge kudos to all the teachers out there for your dedication and hard work throughout the school year. We know the impact you have on our children and our lives as a whole. Your long hours and commitment to a bright future for all our children bring them closer to their goals and dreams daily. Thank you for celebrating their achievements and being a part of their education.

The classroom also looks to the end of the week and National Clean Up Your Room Day as a way to prepare for the end of the school year. While we’re sure your classrooms are organized and neat, students desks, cubbies and lockers sometimes become cluttered. Forgotten projects, misplaced objects and books, broken pencils and other such items find their way into the most unusual places.

Enlist your students to tidy up more than usual. Here are some ideas:

    • Have students bring a tote to take home any accumulation of personal items.
    • Assign students to inspect the condition of books kept in the classroom. Those with exceptional wear and tear may need some preventative repair.
    • Games with missing pieces can be placed on a report. Replacement parts can be found at garage sales or swaps.
    • Desks, cubbies, and lockers can be decluttered.

As always, the classroom includes puzzles and trivia to keep things interesting. The archive contains projects from previous celebrations, so be sure to check those out, too.

Families come in a variety shapes, sizes and configurations.  Sometimes their stories get lost or their cultures are blended.  National Visit Your Relatives Day provides an opportunity for students to learn more about their families and open a dialogue.

    Lesson 1

Assign your students to interview at least one relative that they don’t spend a lot of time with.  It may be a sibling who is busy or with whom they don’t get along.  Or, it may be a grandparent, uncle or cousin who lives far away.  The interview can be completed via phone, video chat.  It does not have to be in person.  It can also be an interview with their closest family member. They may discover things they thought they knew.  Maybe mom doesn’t serve brussels sprouts because she doesn’t like them!

    1. Invite the person you’ve selected for an interview. Be sure to get their permission to record their answers
    2. Set a time and place for the conversation to take place
    3. Write down a list of ten questions to ask with plenty of room to write their answers. If you have permission, you may use a recording device.
    4. Type up your interview for a historical family record.

    LESSON 2 – Create a Family Tree

Visit with your family to create a basic family tree.

LESSON 3 – Visit with your family and find out where they have traveled, where each are from. Place pins in the map and see how many states, countries, and continents your classroom can cover! What kind of journeys will your classroom take?

In the classroom this week, National School Nurses Day takes center stage.  School nurses provide a valuable resource and prevent many emergencies from occurring.  At the same time, they provide education, care and support in the schools.

LESSON – National School Nurse Day First Aid Kit

While school nurses provide valuable first aid on campus, many students may not have first aid kits available at home. Preparing a starter kit will help get the process started. Many homes have these items already, but not always in one space.

Visit the Red Cross website for a complete recommended list of items for a home first aid kit. Challenge students and their parents or guardians to put together the most complete homemade first aid kit from items they have at home.

Let your students look skyward and study the clouds, moisture content, wind speeds and other elements of the weather.  National Weather Observers Day on May 4 provides an opportunity to create a weather station in the classroom.

    WEATHER STATION PROJECTS

We’ve collected several links and ideas that will provide inspiration for weather observing projects in the classroom.  Select the one that best fits your age group and celebrate National Weather Observers Day on May 4.
