WORLD MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS DAY | MAY 30

World Multiple Sclerosis Day on May 30th creates an opportunity to boost awareness and connect those with MS to resources and improve support systems.

    #WorldMultipleSclerosisDay

As one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system, Multiple Sclerosis impacts more than 2.3 million people around the world according to the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation.  The term multiple sclerosis means “many scars,” and this term relates to the areas that appear on the brain and spinal cord after the myelin covering our nerves is damaged or dies. The damaged myelin leaves a lesion behind. These lesions are identified by an MRI when symptoms begin to appear.

The resulting symptoms vary and progress at different rates for each person diagnosed with MS. The disease is unpredictable, progressive, and challenging to diagnose. The cause is also unknown.

While there is no cure, treatments are advancing to help slow the progression of MS and reduce the symptoms. As with many conditions, education, research, and funding are necessary.

HOW TO OBSERVE WORLD MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS DAY

  • LOOMIS DAY – May 30

    LOOMIS DAY | May 30

Each year on May 30th, Loomis Day recognizes the man who received the patent for wireless telegraphy in 1872. The Washington, D.C. dentist, Mahlon Loomis, received US patent number 129,971 titled “An Improvement in Telegraphing” on wireless telegraphy in July of 1872 beating Guglielmo Marconi’s United Kingdom patent by nearly 25 years.

    #LoomisDay

Born on July 21, 1826, Loomis was also the inventor of artificial teeth and one of the earliest inventors of wireless communication. Loomis died on October 13, 1886.

Leading up to his patent, Loomis conducted many experiments in electricity using kites flying miles apart in the mountains of Virginia. Then in 1868 before several scientists and Congressmen, he demonstrated his wireless telegraphic system. While he couldn’t explain how he was able to produce the transmission, he appealed to Congress for an appropriation to incorporate the Loomis Aerial Telegraph Company for research. Senator Charles Sumner introduced the bill, and on May 30, 1872, the Committee on Commerce reported poorly on the measure. Stripped of its appropriations, it eventually passed in 1873 strictly as a bill of incorporation.

  • NATIONAL MINT JULEP DAY – May 30

NATIONAL MINT JULEP DAY | MAY 30

National Mint Julep Day on May 30th each year sets up a refreshing toast to summer. Each year, people around the country gather for a glass of mint julep! This refreshing southern classic is a traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby.

    #MintJulepDay

A classic mint julep is made with a mint leaf, bourbon, sugar, and water. In the Southern states, where mint julep is more associated with the cuisine, spearmint is the mint of choice. Preparation of the drink may vary from one bartender to another.

    • Some believe the mint julep originated in the southern United States sometime during the 18th century.
    • The term “julep” is generally defined as a sweet drink, particularly one used as a vehicle for medicine.
    • During the 19th century, Americans also enjoyed a gin-based julep.
    • Each year, Churchill Downs serves almost 120,000 mint juleps over the two-day period of the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby.
    • May 2008 – Churchill Downs unveiled the world’s largest mint julep glass (6-foot  tall).

  • NATIONAL HOLE IN MY BUCKET DAY – May 30

NATIONAL HOLE IN MY BUCKET DAY

On May 30th of each year, National Hole in My Bucket Day is observed. This wacky holiday is in honor of the fun children’s song; There’s a Hole in My Bucket.

    #HoleInMyBucketDay

The song which has its origins in 1700 Germany, is about a back and forth conversation between Henry and Liza.  Henry needs to fix his leaky bucket.  In each stanza, Henry asks Liza for advice. In the end, he needs a bucket to carry water to repair his bucket.

While this annual event was inspired by a song concerned with fixing a leaky bucket, there are other ways to celebrate this day. We all know it’s a bit of a bummer when a once serviceable bucket gets a hole. But not all is lost. Holey buckets still serve a purpose. While they may no longer hold liquids (or hold them well), they do still maintain volumes of mass. Depending on where the hole is, it can do many jobs.

    • Buckets of many sizes make excellent planters, especially for garden vegetables that sow deep roots.
    • Fill it with concrete to hold a PVC pipe. Then you’ll have a sturdy umbrella stand.
    • Make a garden seat for weeding the flower beds, and you’ll have storage for your tools, too. It doesn’t take a lot of skill to make a padded covered seat out of the lid.
    • Create a compost bin. Even with a hole in it, you’ll be able to make terrific, nutrient-rich compost for your garden.
    • Old galvanized buckets make excellent décor on the patio or in your home. Use them as light shades or side tables.
    • Build a birdhouse, bird feeder, bird or butterfly bath.
    • Storage, storage, storage. Buckets of all kinds can be dressed up and used to store tools, outdoor toys, and gear.

So sing the song while you repurpose your leaky bucket.

  • NATIONAL WATER A FLOWER DAY – May 30

NATIONAL WATER A FLOWER DAY | MAY 30

Recognized each year on May 30th, National Water A Flower Day recognizes the season of caring for our garden plants.

    #WaterAFlowerDay

This time of year, our flower gardens should be in full bloom. Keeping them hydrated sometimes seems like a full-time job. It’s often a therapeutic business, caring for a living thing. The more they’re nurtured, the more they thrive.

It’s important to know whether your flowers like damp soil or to be more on the drier side. Newly planted seeds will need daily watering until germination. Most plants prefer well-drained soil. If they are potted, they may require daily watering. However, if they are planted in the ground or are heat-resistant plants, they may require less frequent watering.

The holiday also offers an opportunity to care for the gardens of those who may be homebound or in the hospital. Take the time to visit a friend who may need some cheering up by bringing them some freshly watered flowers.
