    National Corn Fritters Day on July 16th encourages us to fry up a batch of these crispy, flavorful bites of corn and batter! Make them with fresh corn and the celebration will be even better!


    These bright crispy morsels make great additions to summer barbecues and backyard gatherings. The main ingredients include corn, meal, egg, milk, and butter. While they may have originated in the south, corn fritters can easily be changed up with peppers, onions, or herbs to give them regional and seasonal flair.

    When paired with other vegetables and a pan-fried fish filet, corn fritters added to a lightly toasted bun create a unique fish sandwich. Don’t look at corn fritters as just a side dish, but a functional part of a complete meal.  

    Make your fritters small, and they become appetizers. When there’s a bumper crop of sweet corn, be sure to freeze some for a taste of summer during the winter. These corn fritters will brighten up a gloomy, cold day.

    The Residence Act establishes the District of Columbia as the United States’ capital.


    The Dixie cup is patented. Attorney Lawrence W. Luellen of Newton, Massachusetts originally designed the paper cup in 1908 to use with his water dispensing machine. He partnered with Hugh Moore of the American Water Supply Company and set out to change the world’s water drinking habits. Instead of sharing drinking glasses and communal drinking tins, the partners suggested their product stopped the spread of germs by being a single-use, disposable drinking vessel.


    Oklahoma City installs the world’s first parking meter. Carl Magee received patent no. 2,118,318 for his invention and initially trademarked it as the “Dual.” However, Magee would later rename the invention the “Park-O-Meter.”


    Joe DiMaggio broke his own consecutive game hitting streak when he hit his 56th. The Yankee began and ended the streak against pitcher Eddie Smith of the Chicago White Sox. The phenomenal streak ended on July 17th against the Cleveland Indians and pitcher Al Smith. No one has repeated the feat or broken it since.


    Little, Brown and Company publishes J.D. Salinger’s coming-of-age novel, Catcher in the Rye.

    Mary Baker Eddy established the Church of Christ, Scientist, also known as Christian Science.

    Ida B. Wells – 1862

    In 1896, the American journalist help found the National Association of Colored Women. During her lifetime she served as a teacher, newspaper owner, and advocate for African American rights. In 1892, she began an anti-lynching campaign

    Orville Redenbacher – 1907

    The bow tie-wearing food scientist developed his own brand of popping corn alongside his business partner Charles Bowman. The famous brand was originally named Red Bow in 1970, but was soon changed to Orville Redenbacher’s Gourmet Popping Corn.

    Will Ferrell – 1967

    The American actor and comedian rose through the ranks of Saturday Night Live to the big screen in comedies like Zoolander, Elf and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.



    Each year on July 16th, National Personal Chef Day recognizes the dedication and hard work of personal chefs across the United States.  


    There’s a difference between a personal chef and a private chef. A private chef usually works exclusively for one client and typically lives in a person’s home or on the property. A personal chef may have many clients, run their own business, or work for a company.

    The services a personal chef provides may include preparing meals in the clients’ homes or delivering meals already prepared. They may also create a meal plan according to dietary needs or the client’s preferences. Clients then follow instructions provided by the chef for heating the meals. Some personal chefs offer catering services as well.

    Since being a personal chef is a competitive business, experience, and training is necessary. While not all personal chefs attend a culinary program, they do have years of experience and have honed their skills in the trade.

    The days can be long for a personal chef. Depending on the client, their duties include shopping, preparation, and clean up. A dedicated chef with several clients will also spend long hours on their feet. Personal Chef Day acknowledges the hard work and often long lonely hours a chef puts into their craft. Many days also require additional research for clients with allergies or special diets. However, their passion for cooking and bringing nutritious, delicious meals to the table keeps them striving to create in the kitchen. The celebration dedicates the day to personal chefs with the drive to keep growing their skills and their business.

    Some celebrate this holiday in February of each year.


    For anyone aiming to become a personal chef or run their own business, this day is for you. Pat yourself on the back. If you know someone interested in being a personal chef, encourage them.   • NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY – Third Sunday in July


    Dish or cone? That’s all we need to know. National Ice Cream Day on the 3rd Sunday in July offers up every flavor on the menu to honor the day! The holiday also lands in the middle of National Ice Cream Month.  


    Thousands of years ago, people in the Persian Empire put snow in a bowl, poured concentrated grape juice over it, and ate it as a treat. Even when the weather was hot, they would savor this sweet treat. Their trick? They placed snow in underground chambers known as yakchal where the temperatures kept the snow from melting. The Persians also hiked to the mountain tops by their summer capital to gather snowfall. 

    The Chinese, under the Tang Dynasty around 697 AD, took to freezing dairy with salt and ice. However, the results aren’t exactly the ice cream we enjoy today. Frozen treats and beverages later, culinary folks point to Naples, Italy as the birthplace of the first ice cream. They give credit to Antonio Latini. He was born in 1642 and created a milk-based sorbet.

    In the United States, the Quaker colonists earn the nod for bringing their ice recipes over with them. They opened the first ice cream shops, including shops in New York and other cities during the colonial era.

    • Ben Franklin, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson enjoyed ice cream.
    • 1813 -First Lady Dolley Madison served ice cream at the Inaugural Ball.
    • 1832 – African American confectioner, Augustus Jackson, created multiple ice cream recipes as well as a superior technique to manufacture ice cream.
    • 1843 – Philadelphian, Nancy Johnson, received the first U.S. patent for a small-scale hand-cranked ice cream freezer.
    • 1920 – Harry Burt puts the first ice cream trucks on the streets.

    An astonishing fact regarding Thomas Jefferson – his recipe for Old Fashioned Vanilla Ice Cream is believed to be the oldest recipe for ice cream in the USA. The recipe below is provided by the Library of Congress.  The transcript is word for word for ease of following along.

    Ice cream.

    2 bottles of good cream.
    6 yolks of eggs.
    1/2 lb. sugar
    mix the yolks & sugar
    put the cream on a fire in a casse
    -role, first putting in a stick of Vanilla.

    when near boiling take it off &
    pour it gently into the mixture
    of eggs & sugar.
    stir it well.
    put it on the fire again stirring
    it thoroughly with a spoon to
    prevent it’s sticking to the casse--role.
    when near boiling take it off and
    strain it thro’ a towel.

    put it in the Sabottiere
    then set it in ice an hour before
    it is to be served. put into the
    ice a handful of salt.
    put ice all around the Sabottiere
    i.e. a layer of ice a layer of salt
    for three layers.

    put salt on the coverlid of the
    Sabotiere & cover the whole with ice.
    leave it still half a quarter of an hour.
    then turn the Sabottiere in the
    ice 10 minutes
    open it to loosen with a spatula
    the ice from the inner sides of
    the Sabotiere.
    shut it & replace it in the ice.
    open it from time to time to de-
    -tach the ice from the sides.

    when well taken (prise) stir it
    well with the Spatula.
    put it in moulds, justling it
    well down on the knee.
    then put the mould into the same bucket of ice.
    leave it there to the moment of serving it.
    to withdraw it, immerse the
    mould in warm water,
    turning it well till it
    will come out & turn it
    into a plate.
