  • COW APPRECIATION DAY – Changes Annually

COW APPRECIATION DAY | SECOND TUESDAY IN JULY

Have you herd? Things go udderly awry in the middle of July each year during Cow Appreciation Day. People dress like bovines for free food. It’s a moo-ving experience to witness designed to save the lives of cows everywhere for just one day. How? By eating chicken instead, that’s how.

    #CowAppreciationDay

Across the country, for one day only, adults and children alike herd into their local Chick-fil-A for their favorite cow meal. And it’s not hay.

Spotted cowls of black and white hoof it across town. Between baseball and soccer, they steer themselves toward the nearest grazing. If it feels like deja-moo, perhaps you’ve joined in the stampede a time or two.

They arrive in cars, trucks, and even cow-a-sakies. Even though the crowds grow and grow, there’s never any need to beef up security. While some of us may be outstanding in our fields, we should get a mooove on before it’s pasture time to get free food.

Even the dairies across the country have joined the herd. They remind everyone of the good products cows and producers bring our way. It’s a positive way of milking a celebration and utilizing both sides of the hide.

HOW TO OBSERVE COW APPRECIATION DAY

Dress like a cow. Holstein, Herford, Angus – take your pick. Visit Chick-fil-A and get a free meal. Celebrate the cow. Give a cow some hay. They deserve it. Use #CowAppreciationDay to share on social media.

    COW APPRECIATION DAY HISTORY

Chick-Fil-A created Cow Appreciation Day in commemoration of Heff R. Jones and his humorous “EAT MOR CHIKIN” billboard campaign that took place in 1995. In 2004, the first event was launched. It led to a fun and entertaining promotion for the restaurant.

  • NATIONAL 7-ELEVEN DAY – July 11

    NATIONAL 7-ELEVEN DAY | JULY 11

On July 11th, one convenience chain celebrates with specials on National 7-Eleven Day! Conveniently scheduled on 7-11 of each year, the day often features one of their signature items, the Slurpee.

    #National7ElevenDay

The day focuses on franchise customers. The chain offers discounts and often free Slurpees in their many flavors. Since July is known for its summer heat, the icy cold beverage is a popular choice for cooling off all summer long.

The Slurpee debuted in 1966. While the machine already existed, 7-Eleven modified the machine made by Knedlik, which was used to make the Icee, and then branded and licensed the frozen drink under the name Slurpee. Advertising executive, Bob Stanford, gave the sweet, icy drink the name for the sound it makes as it is sucked through a straw.

The term brain freeze existed before 7-Eleven commandeered it in 1991 to replace ice cream headache or the more technical cold stimulus headache. In 1990, brain freeze was often used as a sports term to refer to athletes who faltered on the field. It also applied to the side effects of medications, especially if they affected our mental capacity. However, immediately after 7-Eleven supposedly redefined the phrase, sports columnists quickly reused the phrase to their benefit. Athletes still had a brain freeze when they made an error, but the columnists cleverly explained the player must have had a Slurpee before taking the field.

    Brain Freeze Tips

Of course, brain freeze is inevitable if you drink a frozen beverage too fast. In preparation for the day, we offer a few tips.

    1. Put down the drink.
    2. Sip from a warmer liquid.
    3. If a warmer liquid isn’t available, press your tongue against the roof of your mouth.
    4. Cover your mouth and nose with your hand.
    5. Breath through your nose. This allows warmer air to circulate through your sinus passages.
    6. Return to drinking your Slurpee at a slower pace.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL 7-ELEVEN DAY

Go to your local 7-Eleven and get a free Slurpee in your favorite flavor. Share on social media and include #National7ElevenDay

    7-ELEVEN DAY HISTORY

7-Eleven first celebrated 7-Eleven Day in 2002. They encouraged customers to visit their local 7-Eleven to enjoy a free beverage as a thank you to the 7-Eleven customers. The company, which is considered the first convenience store which started in 1927 under the name of Southland Ice Company with the logo Totem, because people could conveniently “tote ’em” home their items. It wasn’t until 1947 when the company expanded its hours to from 7 AM to 11 PM that it changed its name.

  • NATIONAL MOJITO DAY – July 11

NATIONAL MOJITO DAY | July 11

Each year on July 11th, people across America raise a glass to mark National Mojito Day. The cocktail consists of white rum, sugar, lime juice, sparkling water, and mint.

    #NationalMojitoDay

The Mojito is a traditional Cuban highball, and while rumored to be a drink favored by the author Ernest Hemingway, it’s never been proven. It seems the story behind Hemingway and the Mojito is a tall tale to attract visitors and to sell drinks. Isn’t every origin story behind a drink designed to sell more of the original anyway?

Whether Hemingway ever had a Mojito or even liked it, doesn’t matter. With a low alcohol content, this refreshing cocktail gains popularity in the summertime for its refreshing combination of sweetness, citrus, and mint flavors. The exhilarating flavor says summer and stimulates the palate, too. The Mojito serves up a perfect pairing with barbecues and evenings at the beach.

Lime wedges and mint leaves garnish an ice filled glass of Mojito.

Although born in Cuba, the exact origin of the Mojito remains under debate with roots as early as 1586.

A variety of recipes add fruit to the Mojito for unique summer combinations. The already refreshing beverage lends itself to being mixed in large pitchers for serving a crowd or individual drinks for one or two people. Mixes also offer the simplicity of just adding rum. However, fresh, simple ingredients bring out the best flavor of a Mojito.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL MOJITO DAY

Mix up a pitcher to enjoy Mojitos with friends on the patio or deck. It will hit the spot on a hot summer day, too. (Remember always to drink responsibly and never to drink and drive.)

The bright summer flavor of the Mojito also inspires desserts. So, we found some delicious recipes to try. Won’t you share yours, too?

  • ALL AMERICAN PET PHOTO DAY – July 11

ALL AMERICAN PET PHOTO DAY | JULY 11

All American Pet Photo Day encourages pet owners to share their favorite pet photos on July 11th. Be sure to charge your camera and be prepared to take adorable pictures of your pets!

    #AllAmericanPetPhotoDay

Whether they are the four-legged furry kind or come from the more serpentine species, click away. Fishes and birds, pigs and equine, canine and feline should all get in line for their favorite pose. If they are friends, take a few snapshots of them together! On All American Pet Photo Day, every pet gets included.

When it comes to capturing the perfect image of your loyal pal, it might take some effort. Like humans, some furry and not so furry friends are camera shy. A pocketful of treats helps ease them into the shot. If bribery doesn’t work, sometimes exercise before the photoshoot will. Another option is misdirection. Focus their attention on another area beyond the lens of the camera, and you might get the picture you want. If all else fails, wait until your sweet companion falls asleep and click away. They’re at their cutest when they’re resting anyway.

Remember to keep your pet safe and comfortable. Don’t let your pet become overheated or over-anxious. A stressed pet won’t take a good photo. Defer to your pet’s temperament, toss out the costumes, and accept the blurred selfie.

HOW TO OBSERVE ALL AMERICAN PET PHOTO DAY

Dress them up, take them to the park, set them in a chair, put them on a fancy pillow, or whatever your imagination creates for a unique photograph of your loved ones. Post on social media using #AllAmericanPetPhotoDay.

Another great way to celebrate is to think about subscribing to monthly shipments of the pet items you regularly need to care for your critters.

  • NATIONAL BLUEBERRY MUFFIN DAY – July 11

NATIONAL BLUEBERRY MUFFIN DAY | JULY 11

National Blueberry Muffin Day on July 11th gives us a great reason to get up in the morning and celebrate! Americans love their blueberry muffins so much, it’s their number 1 favorite muffin flavor. Whether it is for breakfast or a snack, blueberry muffins are melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

    #BlueberryMuffinDay

While enjoying a delicious blueberry muffin, consider the powerhouse the blueberry is. This once wild berry became domesticated during the early 1900s thanks to the observations of Elizabeth Coleman White and the research of Dr. Frederick V. Coville. Before their efforts, wild blueberries were never successfully transplanted and raised in any farming operation for personal or commercial production. The only way to enjoy fresh blueberries was to seek them out where they grew naturally.

Today we can enjoy the abundant potassium, vitamin C and B6, and other health benefits of the blueberry much more readily than they did 120 years ago. We bake them into muffins and eat them by the handfuls. They are so likable that we celebrate blueberries as a popsicle, cheesecake and a popover day, too! Don’t forget, July is also National Blueberry Month.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL BLUEBERRY MUFFIN DAY

While celebrating the day, be sure to make a few for co-workers and family, too. It’s not a celebration if you don’t share. It is America’s favorite muffin after all.

Give this blueberry muffin recipe a try! If you don’t bake, be sure to stop by your favorite bakery and pick up a few. Give them a shout out, too.

  • NATIONAL RAINIER CHERRY DAY – July 11

NATIONAL RAINIER CHERRY DAY | JULY 11

National Rainier Cherry Day on July 11th recognizes the cherry variety named after Mount Rainier. In 1952, Harry Fogle of Washington State University developed the Rainier cherry by cross-breeding the Bing and Van cherry varieties.

    #RainierCherryDay

The sweet Rainier cherries have a thin skin and a thin creamy-yellow flesh. Cherries are a temperamental crop that is sensitive to temperature, wind, and rain. Each season, birds eat almost one-third of the crop. While cherries in general present growing challenges, Rainier cherries are unique. Their delicate skins require the cherries to be hand-picked. However, superior taste keeps producers and consumers coming back for more.

Due to their superior taste, Rainiers are considered a premium cherry.

This popular fruit is in such high demand that growers take extra pains to ensure the fruit does not go to the birds. They cover the trees in nets and plant them between red cherry trees to encourage the bees to pollinate the blossoms. Besides hand-picking the fruit, the harvesters place the cherries into small bags to avoid bruising. Every necessary precaution is taken, so the cherries arrive in the market in perfect and delicious condition.

In honor of the day and as part of the Tree-to-Table program, the Northwest Cherry Growers hand-pick one restaurant in each state to feature at least one Rainier cherry dish on July 11th in their restaurants.

    For more information, visit www.nwcherries.com/treetotable.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL RAINIER CHERRY DAY

Purchase some Rainier cherries. Either bake with them or eat them fresh. Take some time to shop around. You may even find wine, cordials, or preserves made from Rainier cherries. The makers of the products will proudly display a label indicating the item is made with Rainier cherries. Post on social media using #RainierCherryDay to encourage others to join in as well.

    NATIONAL RAINIER CHERRY DAY HISTORY

While we were unable to identify the creator of the day, the observance does occur during the peak cherry harvest. Celebrations and contests take place throughout July in recognition of National Rainier Cherry Day.

NATIONAL CHEER UP THE LONELY DAY HISTORY

Our research found Francis Pesek of Detroit, Michigan created this day. His daughter, L.J. Pesek reports that he “was a quiet, kind, wonderful man who had a heart of gold. The idea came to him as a way of promoting kindness toward others who were lonely or forgotten as shut-ins  or in nursing homes.” July 10th was Mr. Pesek’s birthday.
