    CLASSROOM – Roots

November and December are busy holiday seasons where families gather to celebrate their traditions and each other. It’s an excellent time to explore our family roots in the classroom. Children learn their family’s heritage and beliefs. They learn about what has changed and what stays the same. Use this week’s projects to help students open up conversations and learn more about their families.

HOW TO OBSERVE in the Classroom – Roots

Download and print this week’s projects to explore family heritage and history. You can also follow the suggestions below to help your students explore the days in their own way. It might surprise you what they discover! We’re often surprised by our own discoveries!

Celebrate Every Day in the Classroom by:

    1. Asking a question about the day or observance and finding the answer.
    2. Exploring the subject further. Whether you read a book, interview an expert, watch a documentary, or run an experiment, there is always more to learn about the observance.
    3. Writing about the day or observance. You can write about what you learned or what the day means to you.
    4. Telling someone about the day. You might be sharing information that is helpful to someone. Or, you might brighten someone’s day.
    5. Solving a problem. Many observances discuss issues around the world that need fixing. How would you fix it?
    6. Being creative. Draw, paint, build, design, bake, create your idea of what the observance means.

Of course, as always, sharing on social media isn’t required; learning is. But if you do, please use #NDCClassroom to share on social media.

  • NATIONAL DAY CALENDAR CLASSROOM – WEEK 19 – December 16, 2018

    NATIONAL DAY CALENDAR CLASSROOM – WEEK 19 – December 16, 2018

Wrapping up the last classroom of 2018, we will take a look a the American aviators, the Wright Brothers. From a historical, technical and business aspect, the Wright Brothers weave an intriguing story from Dayton, Ohio to Kittyhawk, North Carolina and far beyond.

Check out the classroom projects and assignments, crossword puzzles and word finds that help your classrooms #CelebrateEveryDay! The archives on the main classroom page feature a crossword puzzle from National Mudd Day, as well.

Sharing on social media isn’t required, learning is. But if you do, please use #NDCClassroom to share on social media.

LESSON 1 – Wright Brothers Day

Challenge the class to create the best paper airplane. They will need to study a little bit about aerodynamics. We have provided some of the basics. Students will want to experiment with size, shape, and weight, much like Wilbur and Orville Wright did. They will need to test and record their results.

Thrust is the force that moves a body through the air. On a paper airplane, your hand forces the plane forward. Engines create the thrust on commercial airplanes. Other propulsion systems create thrust for other aircraft.

Lift is a force opposing the weight of an object. Larger wings create greater lift, but a heavier body will require more lift.

Gravity is a force pulling the plane toward the earth.

Drag is a force caused by wind or air resistance pushing in the opposite direction of the plane.

National Cocoa Day warms the classroom with a mug of chocolate and creativity as we peek through some binoculars for the beginning of Christmas Bird Count Week

Check out the classroom projects and assignments, crossword puzzles and word finds that help your classrooms #CelebrateEveryDay!

Sharing on social media isn’t required, learning is. But if you do, please use #NDCClassroom to share on social media.

LESSON 1 – National Cocoa Day (a mug to sip and a mug for art)

    SUPPLIES
    Pencil
    Cocoa Powder
    Water
    Cups (3-4 per child)
    Watercolor paper
    Paintbrushes

Mix cocoa in water so that it is different intensities – dark, darker and darkest. Leave one cup of water for rinsing the brush.  Students can pair up and share, too.

Using a pencil, have the child sketch the outline of a snowman, bird or snowflake. Keep their design simple if this is their first design. Using the lightest cocoa color, paint a light wash over the entire paper. If the color is too dark, cocoa is very forgiving. Rinse the brush in the clear water. Then using a damp brush with no color go lightly back over the paper picking up some of the colors.

Use the darkest color to outline the picture and the medium and light color to add layers of shading. Before the color dries, use a clean, damp brush to pick up the color to allow more highlights to show.  Allowing color to dry between layers allows it darken. Add more cocoa for darker color.

LESSON 2 – Christmas Bird Count Week

Enjoy another cup of hot cocoa with the class, then contact the Audubon Society in your area armed with these supplies. The week-long event is an opportunity for students and their families to head out into nature searching for the beautiful birds native to your area. Whether you live where it snows or stays warm most of the year, the Christmas Bird Count Week is an opportunity as a class or a family to take education outdoors.
