  • NATIONAL BEAN COUNTER DAY – APRIL 16

    NATIONAL BEAN COUNTER DAY

National Bean Counter Day on April 16th is every accountant’s favorite day of the year. After the flutter and the flurry of preparing taxes right up until the stroke of midnight, these diligent number crunchers are well past due for a day off.

    #NationalBeanCountersDay

The term “bean counter” hasn’t always referred to our reliable accountants. Like many phrases, it was much more literal before it morphed into the idiom we use today. Not unlike, meeting a customer at the deli counter or fabric counter to complete their order, clerks met consumers at the bean counter. However, over time, the phrase became attributed to accountants who watched each and every penny (or bean) that went in and out of the business.

Once April 16th rolls around, it’s time to give the accountants a break. All the receipts have been tallied. All the various tax forms in duplicate and triplicate have been submitted. The last couple of months have been a whirlwind of debits and credits. It is time for all bean counters to take a well-deserved break.  April 16th is the accountant’s day to turn off the phone and return to a more normal routine.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL BEAN COUNTERS DAY

    • Don’t call, text, e-mail or visit your accountant on National Bean Counter Day.
    • If you are a bean counter, take the day off!
    • If you happen to see one, send a “thank you” his or her way.
    • Use #NationalBeanCounterDay on social media.

    NATIONAL ORCHID DAY HISTORY

Orchids are beautiful and extremely special. The creators of National Orchid Day, Mike and Faith Young, volunteered at an orchid reserve in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, in 2010. The experience changed their lives forever. So much so, the Youngs decided if they were ever to have a daughter, they would name her Orchid. On April 16, 2014, sadly, they lost their precious daughter during labor. They named her Orchid Faith. Since then, they have been desperately trying to find ways to honor her life.

    Creating National Orchid Day

After discovering that no National Orchid Day existed, the Youngs set out to secure the day in honor of their daughter, Orchid Faith. On the year anniversary of losing their precious little girl, they created a Kickstarter campaign. They offered pre-orders of their backyard honey (The Humble Bumbles Honey), intending to designate April 16th as National Orchid Day through the Official National Day Registrar. Within the first day, they met their goal, and the campaign brought in over $1,500. Thanks to the generosity and kindness of many friends, family, and supporters, April 16th will now forever be National Orchid Day in honor of their daughter.

For the rest of their lives, Mike and Faith say they will be caring for and spreading awareness about orchids. They feel having a National Orchid Day dedicated to the beautiful life they lost, people everywhere will appreciate orchids a little bit more, and their little girl will feel the warmth of those that think of orchids that day. They feel as though all orchids represent their little girl and hope that this special day will inspire those who come across orchids to think of their daughter, Orchid Faith, too; she is alive within you and all of us.

    Radiant Faith Orchid

For Mother’s Day 2015, Mike designated and named a Cattleya orchid ‘Radiant Faith’ through Chadwick and Son Orchids, Inc. The International Orchid Register of the Royal Horticulture Society in England officially recognizes and recognizes the Radiant Faith orchid. The Youngs were inspired by Pantone’s color of the year for 2014 (the year they lost their daughter) – Radiant Orchid. Learn more about the Radiant Faith orchid by visiting the International Orchid Register

In 2015, the Registrar at National Day Calendar® proclaimed National Orchid Day to be observed on April 16th, annually.

    Orchid FAQ

    Q. How many kinds of orchids are there?

    Q. How long do orchids live?
    A. They can live up to 100 years or longer. A tiger orchid in the Singapore Botanic Garden is believed to be more than 150-years-old. It may also be the world’s largest orchid.

  • NATIONAL HEALTHCARE DECISIONS DAY – April 16

    NATIONAL HEALTHCARE DECISIONS DAY

National Healthcare Decisions Day educates and empowers the public and healthcare providers to take part in important advance care planning.

    #HealthcareDecisionsDay

In the absence of an advanced directive, medical personnel relies on family members to determine what a patient’s wishes might be. Family members also often struggle to make these difficult decisions. However, many of these difficult decisions can be avoided with advanced planning.

The observance emphasizes the importance of advance directives, and national, state and community organizations come together in a collaborative effort to promote the day. These entities are working together to ensure the availability of the information, opportunity, and access needed to document health care decisions.

While advance care planning seems like a difficult discussion, the alternative leaves family members struggling to make the decision for you. Completing an advanced directive removes the burden from our loved ones. It also frees us to have more pleasant conversations in the future.

HOW TO OBSERVE HEALTHCARE DECISIONS DAY

    • Plan ahead for your important healthcare decisions.
    • Find the documents you need now, complete them, and put them where they are easily accessible.
    • Discuss your decisions with your loved ones.
    • Let them know where your documents are in the event you have a healthcare event, too.
    • Encourage other family members to complete an advance directive, too.
    • Don’t place the burden of these decisions on your loved ones.
    • Use #HealthcareDecisionsDay to post on social media.

  • NATIONAL EGGS BENEDICT DAY – April 16

    NATIONAL EGGS BENEDICT DAY

On April 16th, National Eggs Benedict Day celebrates a long-favored breakfast or brunch dish. Eggs Benedict consists of poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce and Canadian bacon or ham on English muffin halves.

    #NationalEggsBenedictDay

There are two different stories as to how Eggs Benedict came to be.

    • In 1894 stockbroker Lemuel Benedict ordered “buttered toast, poached eggs, crisp bacon, and a side of Hollandaise”  at the Waldorf Hotel. They were so impressed with the dish that they put it on the menu, substituting ham and English muffins in place of the bacon and toast.
    • In the early 18th century, Pope Benedict XIII liked an egg dish so much that he requested it time and time again. Many believe that Pope Benedict XIII had an illness that added to his desire for this particular egg dish, hence the name Eggs Benedict.

Some restaurants serve their own versions of Eggs Benedict. Mix it up by substituting the ham for salmon or corned beef. Add sliced tomatoes or steamed asparagus. Replace the English muffin with thick, crusty toast or thin, crisp bagels. There are so many ways to be creative in the kitchen. The important elements with Eggs Benedict are properly poached eggs and a perfect hollandaise sauce. When the yolk and sauce blend with all the other ingredients, this meal is divine.

    NATIONAL EGGS BENEDICT DAY HISTORY

National Day Calendar continues to research the origins of this delicious food holiday.

    Eggs Benedict

    Q. Why is my hollandaise sauce runny?
    A. Hollandaise is one of the more temperamental sauces to make. It’s a balancing act of egg yolks, butter, lemon juice, and mixing. If you’ve melded these ingredients together but the sauces is thin, one quick fix is adding a small amount of thickener like starch over a little heat in a double boiler. You can also add more butter or more egg yolks.

    Q. Why did my hollandaise sauce curdle?
    A. The likely cause is too much heat. You will need to start again because there’s no fixing curdled hollandaise.

    Q. Can I use a fried egg for Eggs Benedict?
    A. It’s not Eggs Benedict unless the egg is poached. Poached eggs create a creamier texture than fried eggs, no matter how slow or gently you fry them.
