Ingredients:
4 cups all purpose flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 oil or bacon grease
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Mix flour, baking soda, and salt and flour in a large bowl.
In a large bowl, heat milk and oil in the microwave until warm.
Slowly add flour to liquid mixture until dough is sticky. Mix until well blended. Do not knead dough. You may not use all the flour, but use as much as possible.
Once dough is ready, sprinkle flour on a flat surface. Transfer dough to the surface on top of sprinkled flour. Knead 4 or 5 times.
Shape dough into an oval shape, keeping middle section at least 2 inches thick and transfer to baking sheet.
Using a fork, poke holes in the top of the dough.
Bake at 375 for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Use a toothpick to check if bread is cooked in the middle.
Remove from oven and let cool for 30 minutes. Brush butter or lard over top to soften the crust.
Serve with butter, honey, jam or peanut butter.
TIP: Toast and serve with eggs.
