NATIONAL SOBER DAY

National Sober Day on September 14th encourages us to celebrate Sober life and bring awareness to addiction. The entire day focuses on showing support for anyone living in sobriety. Not only that, but the observance sets a standard for the whole world that being sober is okay. Show your friends and family on the road to recovery by spending the day sober as well.

Ideally scheduled during National Recovery Month, the day supports removing the stigma associated with addiction. It opens the lines of communication that lead to better understanding. The day provides an opportunity to build educated support networks. It also strengthens existing ones. When systems are paved with an aware, loving, and honest cheering section, success is more likely. If we stumble, aren’t we more likely to get back up again when we have a solid support system?

Encouragement of one day fuels more support and awareness, leading to long-term sobriety. That’s something worth celebrating! The opposite of addiction is a connection. This holiday will provide a model for future generations as well. By demonstrating how to enjoy life alcohol-free, the day will embolden future generations to say no to alcohol.

Sober FAQ

Q. What other sober activities can I do?
A. Choose activities that make it difficult to drink alcohol. For example, play or learn to play an instrument. Some other ideas include:
- Visit a museum.
- Join a recreation league.
- Invite friends to cook a big meal or make freezer meals.
- Go to the library and read those books you’ve wanted to read.
- Host a tea, coffee, or mocktail tasting party.
- Learn a new craft and invite others to join you.
- Travel. A day trip or one across the country – either one will do!
- Join a band.
- Host a book group.
- Go hiking.
- Volunteer.
- Take your children or your nieces, nephews, or cousins to the park.
You can do all these activities with others. Some of them are even better when others are involved. So call a friend and pick something new to do.

Q. Are there other sober-related days on the calendar?
A. Yes. National Mocktail Week and National Online Recovery Day are two days on the calendar designed to support recovery and sober living.

Celebrate all your favorite cocktails on March 24th. National Cocktail Day ushers in all the best ways to savor a beverage at the end of a long workday. Whether you like a fruity drink, blended or on the rocks, this day is for you. Mocktail, virgin, or the real thing, celebrate the lemon, lime, bitters, liquors, and liqueurs that make your favorite beverages the best in your bartender book.

It’s probably no surprise that nearly every month on the calendar celebrates a cocktail. The only exception is April, and since it’s National Alcohol Awareness Month, it makes sense to take that month off.

A cocktail contains a spirit or a mix of spirits. While a beer is not considered a cocktail, there are beer cocktails where beer is added to a distilled ingredient. The same applies to wine.

The other months pay homage to histories, ingredients, and the makers of some legendary cocktails. January begins the year dedicating a day to the Bloody Mary, and there’s also a day for her Canadian counterpart, the Bloody Caesar, in May. January also devotes an entire week to Mocktails. In February, you can celebrate the Margarita and Kahlua. March brings us International Whisk(e)y Day, among others. Skipping back to May, you can imbibe in both Palomas and Mimosas for your celebrations.

June & July

June and July compete for the most cocktail-related days. From Martinis and Bourbon in June to Pina Coladas and Daiquiris in July, the two months cover the spectrum. There are even a few bottles of wine in between. Not only do they celebrate specific cocktails but they also celebrate the places we enjoy them. National Dive Bar Day in July invites us to celebrate the places that serve our favorite cocktails, even if it’s an ice-cold beer.

The rest of the year covers all our chilled and heated cocktails. By December, we readily reminisce National Repeal Day and the Bartenders who keep that era and the skills alive.

We have only skimmed the surface of the cocktails celebrated on the calendar, so National Cocktail Day allows you to celebrate whichever one you like!

- Visit your local bar and pick your bartender’s brain. Some like to share their techniques. Ask them what their favorite cocktail is. And, be sure to tip them well for their advice and service.
- Try making a mocktail. Especially on those weeknights when work is busy, and you need to keep up. Many of them infuse nutrients many of us are lacking. Keep these recipes on hand for your friends who are designated drivers, sober for life, supporting a friend, or for any reason.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CHARITY

International Day of Charity on September 5th encourages organizations and individuals to help others. The day also emphasizes increasing solidarity and promoting social responsibility.

The UN recognizes that volunteering and philanthropic work provides social bonding while creating resilient societies. Giving to those in need helps to alleviate the worst effect of humanitarian crises. The basic necessities of food, clothing, and shelter are provided when others give. These donations also spread a message of humanity to the underprivileged and those surrounded by conflict.

Today, nearly half of the earth’s population lives in poverty. That’s 3 billion people living on less than $2.50 a day. One billion children around the world live in poverty. About 22,000 of these children die each day. Hunger is one of the leading causes of death among the poor. Millions of people throughout the world don’t have access to clean drinking water. Two million children die each year from preventable diseases. Twenty-five percent of all human beings don’t have electricity.

These sobering statistics point to the fact that there are an endless number of needs in our world. While you can’t possibly help everyone, you can do your part by helping someone. The International Day of Charity is a great time to do just that. As the saying goes, “it’s better to give than to receive.”

HOW TO OBSERVE #InternationalDayofCharity

There are many ways for you to celebrate the International Day of Charity. One of which is researching different charities. There are thousands of them out there, and by researching, you might find an under-supported one you can promote. You could volunteer at a homeless shelter, soup kitchen, or another place in your community that serves the underprivileged. Give to a food pantry or run a food bank outside your local grocery store.

If you want to give a monetary donation, peruse crowdfunding platforms, and find a need to fill. There are also many nonprofit organizations, such as Compassion International, where you can sponsor a child living in poverty.

Other people or organizations that always need volunteers include churches, animal shelters, and senior centers.

Chances are, you won’t have to go too far to help someone in need. That person in need might be your next-door neighbor or the homeless person at that intersection you always drive by. Whoever they are, today is a great day to give.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CHARITY HISTORY

Mother Teresa of Calcutta is one of the most well-known humanitarians in modern history. It’s due to her selfless devotion to serving the poor that September 5th was chosen as International Day of Charity. It was on this day in 1997 that Mother Teresa passed away at the age of 87.

In 2011, the Hungarian Parliament chose to commemorate the anniversary of her death by making it a national holiday for their country. In 2012, the UN General Assembly resolved to make the Hungarian holiday an International one.

RIDE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER – Two Weeks Before and Through Labor Day
RIDE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER

Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over during the two weeks leading up to Labor Day targets motorcyclists who ride when they have been drinking.

The campaign focus on the end of riding season for much of the US. As motorcyclists head into the extended Labor Day weekend, the campaign aims to decrease drunk riding. The long, warm days of summer begin to fade, and riding season winds down. For some, it’s their last long, summer ride. For too many who choose to ride while drinking, it will be their last ride forever.

The bottle and the throttle don’t mix.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says 25% of motorcycle riders killed in crashes are drunk. A rider is considered intoxicated when their blood alcohol limit reaches or exceeds .08.

However, NHTSA says many alcohol-related motorcycle crashes are caused by riders who are slightly under the .08 limit. Though they’ve had less than the legal limit, it’s still enough to let booze to overwhelm their usual safety cautiousness. Hence, they end up pushing themselves and their machines past safe limits.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, this is all it takes to affect riders:
- .02 – It becomes difficult to perform two tasks at the same time.
- .05 – Tracking moving objects becomes difficult and response time to emergency situations is reduced.
- .08 – Riders lose concentration and perception of road conditions.
- .10 – Braking appropriately becomes difficult.
HOW TO OBSERVE RIDE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER

Before drinking, plan a sober ride home. If you see a drunk rider on the road, call law enforcement immediately. When you are hosting a group ride, make sure food and non-alcoholic drinks are served. Provide drinking riders with safe rides home. Assure them their motorcycles will be secure, and they will get a return ride to their bike when they are sober.

RIDE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER HISTORY

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sponsors Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over annually. The program singularly targets motorcyclists and is part of a regularly occurring crackdown on drunk driving organized. Other Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaigns targeting four-wheel vehicle drivers are:
- Feb 3, Super Bowl.
- Mar 17 St. Patrick’s Day.
- May 5 Cinco de Mayo.
- July 4 Independence Day.

WORLD PALOMA DAY

On May 22, World Paloma Day recognizes the national drink of Mexico. This refreshing cocktail made with tequila and grapefruit soda is definitely worth celebrating!

The growing reputation of the Paloma in the United States may be related to its sparkling personality. The vibrant flavor and bright citrus notes combined with a light, energetic flare makes the Paloma a celebration drink.

However, where and when the Paloma began is a bit of mystery. In 1938, the first grapefruit soda came on the scene in the United States. From there, the soda made its way to Mexico in 1955. Whoever first mixed tequila, lime and grapefruit soda brought together an undeniably beautiful and delightful beverage.

The Paloma’s shimmering character is just one reason it is the most popular cocktail in Mexico. Easily mixed in large batches to serve in a pitcher for company, the Paloma complements a summer cookout, as well as a more formal affair.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Order a Paloma tonight, mix one up yourself or make a pitcher to share with friends. To enjoy at home, try this recipe:

2 oz Cenote Blanco Tequila
1⁄2 oz Fresh lime juice
Grapefruit soda, to top

Garnish – lime wedge or grapefruit wedge
Add tequila and lime juice to a highball glass filled with ice.
Fill with grapefruit soda, and stir briefly.
